Meet the Artist: Jill Rosenwald

Before Joanna and I opened Boxwood this past April, it seemed that the most glorious part of retail was going to buying shows in New York, Atlanta, High Point, and more. But no one tells you that there’s a serious lack of natural light, food, and water. The sensory deprivation does a number on your executive functioning skills. However, at Shoppe Object this Summer in New York, we found our fresh air: one of our favorite artists, Jill Rosenwald.

We are so honored to carry Jill’s work in Boxwood, so I wanted to introduce the Stylebook community to her.

Jill creates the most exquisite pottery with an unparalleled understanding of form, color, and pattern. She describes her style as having classic clean lines, but also throwing a punch of irresistible cheer. Just like her! And with colors like snot, jcrew, thunder, and pudding – it’s hard not to fall in love (we started with the ever classic delft blue, gold, and cadet – but can’t wait to branch out come springtime).

Each piece is thrown on the potters wheel, hand painted, and then gilded with a 14K gold edge. And it’s all custom – you get to pick the color, form, and pattern in what seems like a million combinations. Making her pottery the quintessential statement piece for any table or kitchen counter.

She sold her work on the streets of NYC before hitting it big with her first ceramics line for Neiman Marcus. But her story doesn’t end there. Pottery is a family business. Her husband, Lawrence McRae, is also a brilliant potter with his own, modern take. It doesn’t hurt that his pieces compliment Jill’s to create a beautiful combination.

Jill says that she and Lawrence are, “pursuing the American dream, making a very sincere honest beautiful thing for people in a time when that’s very hard to come by.” And it’s so true. Each piece is a labor of love – hand signed on the bottom.

If you’re traveling to Boston, you can visit their studio which is located in the booming Fort Point neighborhood, a ten-minute walk from South Station, the Boston Design Center, and the Institute for Contemporary Art.

Or you can come into Boxwood any time to see a hand-picked selection of eleven stunning, individual works of art. If you fall in love with one or give it to that special person in your life, you will know there are only a few of that same piece out in the world. A very rare thing these days.

Co-Owner | Boxwood
Over the past 15 years, I’ve covered the major branches of D.C. careers – political campaigns, Senate press office, advertising sales, and strategic communications. But after I had my two kids, I knew I wanted to do something that truly reflected my desire for creative, colorful design. Luckily, I stumbled into a shop on South Royal Street in early 2019 and met Joanna Szczerban. We opened Boxwood in April to offer Old Town a fresh take on home decor and gifts – and we haven’t looked back.

Boxwood was born out of the idea that our homes should be as vibrant and colorful as the people who live in them. So our decorative items and gifts bring a fresh, modern look to Old Town – everything from pillows and table linens to furniture painted with Annie Sloan® Chalk Paint®.
