Father’s Day Man-spiration

The vast majority of the women in my life are “professional enthusiasts.” Typically, I can find something that they will love from any local boutique (or at least flowers and a gift card for Dudley Stephens). But when it comes to the men – I’m usually at a loss. For my Dad this year, my sister and I sprung for the extra pound of bacon to get free shipping from Omaha Steaks. Gift cards and pork-based experiences are great – but what do you do when you want them to open a thing?
Of course, it doesn’t help that my husband’s hobbies are work and family. Only so many times you can frame a picture of the kids for his desk. Here are four ideas featured at Boxwood, both in-store and online:
1) Embrace drinking at home. There are so many fun, innovative tools for whiskey, wine, beer, cocktail aficionados. And nothing says “You’re a Great Dad” like a DIY gin kit or a bartender’s knife.
2) Play games of skill and strategy. Not everything has to be related to alcohol. Give the gift of wholesome family fun with backgammon, checkers, card games, or puzzles. What better way to prove to Dad that you want to spend time with him?
3) Be sentimental. We have a gorgeous linen-bound journal entitled “With My Father” to capture and record in writing and photographs those special memories. Perfect for those who have sadly lost their father recently, it can create a treasured heirloom for years to come.
4) Frame a picture of the kids for his desk. I know, I know. But Joanna and I were just in High Point for market and discovered some really stunning acrylic picture frames from a company out of Austin, Texas. They are stylish and modern for your stylish, modern man. I can’t think of a better gift, literally.

Over the past 15 years, I’ve covered the major branches of D.C. careers – political campaigns, Senate press office, advertising sales, and strategic communications. But after I had my two kids, I knew I wanted to do something that truly reflected my desire for creative, colorful design. Luckily, I stumbled into a shop on South Royal Street in early 2019 and met Joanna Szczerban. We opened Boxwood in April to offer Old Town a fresh take on home decor and gifts – and we haven’t looked back.
Boxwood was born out of the idea that our homes should be as vibrant and colorful as the people who live in them. So our decorative items and gifts bring a fresh, modern look to Old Town – everything from pillows and table linens to furniture painted with Annie Sloan® Chalk Paint®.
