Don’t Forget about the Faux

I don’t know about you, but teacher work days, plus Monday holidays, and cold rain days (aka snow days) in January and February tend to drive me absolutely insane. So, when Fairfax was recently out, I relied on a dear friend to arrange a playdate with my seven-year-old while I worked in the shop. When I went to pick up Nora, I was admiring my friend’s gigantic built-ins. She mentioned she never knows how to style her shelves, giving me the idea to share my absolute favorite addition to any space – faux flowers.

I know, I know, you think the winter has officially gotten to me. But I promise the silk botanicals of today are not what they used to be. Just don’t go to Michael’s to try to prove me wrong. At Boxwood, we carry one line from a vendor in California that feels so real I can almost smell the fragrance.

With Valentine’s Day around the corner, we recognize that nothing can beat the real thing – especially with such creative, local florists like Melinda Hunter, The Enchanted Florist, and Helen Olivia. If only I could splurge on weekly or monthly deliveries.

But when real flowers aren’t a part of your everyday budget, it’s worth investing in long-term stems. In my experience, nothing else provides the same amount of color and visual interest (not even throw pillows).

The grey and white kitchen trend might be here to stay but add some blue hydrangeas or orange ranunculus for a pop of color. Welcome guests on your entry table with a simple bouquet. Break up the horizontal lines between art and the fireplace with a taller bouquet. Staging your house for sale? Add greenery to draw attention to the photos.

I promise, you’ll get every penny back in happiness. Still don’t believe me? Stop by Boxwood to touch and feel our newest addition – pink peonies. Just in time for Valentine’s Day, Easter, baby or bridal showers, Mother’s Day, and every day.

Over the past 15 years, I’ve covered the major branches of D.C. careers – political campaigns, Senate press office, advertising sales, and strategic communications. But after I had my two kids, I knew I wanted to do something that truly reflected my desire for creative, colorful design. Luckily, I stumbled into a shop on South Royal Street in early 2019 and met Joanna Szczerban. We opened Boxwood in April to offer Old Town a fresh take on home decor and gifts – and we haven’t looked back.

Boxwood was born out of the idea that our homes should be as vibrant and colorful as the people who live in them. So our decorative items and gifts bring a fresh, modern look to Old Town – everything from pillows and table linens to furniture painted with Annie Sloan® Chalk Paint®.
