Giving Thanks for That Thanksgiving Table

When it comes to what to wear for the holidays, there are plenty of style tips. From casual to festive, I can bring the bling. But when setting the Thanksgiving table, it’s easy to be overwhelmed and intimidated. How do you create that special look that honors the tradition, highlights Grandma’s recipe, and reflects your personal style?

At Boxwood, we’ve found three keys to the curated table…

First, don’t shun paper goods. It’s no secret that young couples are ditching fine china in favor of more universal, everyday ware. For the holidays, paper has moved leaps and bounds in quality – and can really pack a punch (not to mention leave more time for football and family over dishes). Caspari, headquartered in Charlottesville, is the godmother of tablescaping. We’ve also fallen in love with the whimsical patterns from Hester & Cook out of Nashville. Either way, don’t be afraid of moving away from traditional materials.

If you’re a linen and fine china loyalist (and we appreciate the environmental benefits), you can explore other unexpected items to add layers and interest. Everything from feathers to mini picture frames and bud vases that you already have around the house can add dimension and visual appeal. For example, you can even spray paint gourds and pumpkins a high gloss black or white and mix them with more natural pears and radishes.

And last but not least, color. We’re big fans of looking beyond the traditional oranges and browns of Thanksgiving’s past. For example, check out this gorgeous jewel-toned table by our friend Daniela Shuffler of Aesthetic Oiseau (named one of Washington, D.C.’s best design blogs by Washingtonian and Refinery 29).

We’re also digging corals instead of orange or high contrast with black and white. Sue Henry of Tulusa created these exclusive linens for Boxwood to add a local artisan touch to any Northern Virginia holiday.

Hosting Thanksgiving this year and looking for more advice and ideas? Daniela will be leading a tablescaping workshop at Boxwood the evening of Thursday, November 21st. Spots are limited, so register in the shop or online here.

Over the past 15 years, I’ve covered the major branches of D.C. careers – political campaigns, Senate press office, advertising sales, and strategic communications. But after I had my two kids, I knew I wanted to do something that truly reflected my desire for creative, colorful design. Luckily, I stumbled into a shop on South Royal Street in early 2019 and met Joanna Szczerban. We opened Boxwood in April to offer Old Town a fresh take on home decor and gifts – and we haven’t looked back.

Boxwood was born out of the idea that our homes should be as vibrant and colorful as the people who live in them. So our decorative items and gifts bring a fresh, modern look to Old Town – everything from pillows and table linens to furniture painted with Annie Sloan® Chalk Paint®.
