Zoom Ready

I love collaborating with friends and fellow business owners. So, when Megan Brown called me with a cry for help, I was happy to oblige.

Okay, so it wasn’t really a cry for help, more of a conversation, but it led to a Stylebook post.

We have all lost our way a little when it comes to looking presentable. I went to pick up food the other day and a fairly significant portion of the folks in line with me were wearing pajama bottoms – and it was the afternoon. I am just as guilty. I do all my buying appointments via Zoom and I actually got on one right after I had been on the Peloton. I was covered in sweat and I didn’t really think twice about it. In a few weeks the buying season for next fall starts, which means I have about 40 Zoom appointments and I have made a vow to get dressed before the first one starts. I mean, I am in the fashion industry for Pete’s sake. I need to dress the part; even if I don’t see someone in person, I shouldn’t get a pass on getting dressed. I mean, I should at least have the common decency to shower.

Here is where Megan comes in. Besides teaching HAWT Pilates and Pilates Boot Camp, Megan is also on faculty at the Physical Therapy Department of Marymount University. This semester she is teaching a class and she mentioned how she was too used to her workout clothes and had almost forgotten how to get dressed. She was also beginning to realize, like many others, that she had some voids in her closet, or at least for what teaching via Zoom required. Since she has been a Lululemon ambassador a few times, she has plenty of athleisure and items that help her be “yoga ready,” as she has stated her style tends to be most days. I also know that when Megan shops at my stores she tends to buy more event or dressier pieces. I try to get her to buy a “dressy” sweatshirt and she wrinkles her nose. “I live in that stuff,” she always states. “Show me something dressier.” So, when it comes to teaching classes on Zoom, she tends to not have a lot of the in-between clothes. Simply stated, she doesn’t have many tops.

So, I called in our styling pro, Alicia, and asked her to help Megan put together some looks that were Zoom ready.

She worked her magic, and they come up with great options that help Megan look put together but comfortable enough to be helping her kids with school, running out to take the dog for a walk, or in her home office working on all things Mind the Mat but also professional and professorial.

If you need help freshening up your look, we are here! Stop in or make an appointment if you want to work with someone in particular. If you don’t want to come in, we are happy to drop off some options for you to try in the comfort of your home. Just let us know and we will make it work for you!

I spent the first part of my career as a copy-writer who helped elected officials brag about their support for entrepreneurs. Then I decided to get off the printed page and do it myself. The Shoe Hive made a splash on the fashion scene in Washington, and was named the region’s best shoe store in its first year. Fourteen years later, I have tripled the store’s size and also opened a sister store, The Hive. At The Hive, we offer clothing lines that are sophisticated and approachable like Rag & Bone, Tibi, Raquel Allegra, Ulla Johnson and Veronica Beard. We have tried to fill our racks with clothing you will want to wear all the time, elevated basics that are worth the investment.

Heard the buzz? The Shoe Hive & The Hive are a pair of luxury boutiques in Old Town Alexandria. Featuring both big name designers like Rag & Bone and Stuart Weitzman and smaller brands like AGL and L'Agence, our unique selection and impeccable service are what set us apart.
