I am a “Today Show” loyalist. Because Matt Lauer attended my alma matter, The E.W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University, I feel as though he is speaking to me. I mean at one time he also sat at one of the many watering holes in Athens, Ohio and drank bad draft beer, just like I did. This loyalty is how I learned about the Alexandria Seaport Foundation many years ago. There was a feature on the “Today Show” by Katie Couric which featured an apprenticeship program that taught at-risk youth how to build a boats. Through carpentry, these kids learned a professional skill and social skills that helped them enter the workforce. I was blown away.
Of course plenty of you are young enough that you are asking, ‘Who is Katie Couric?’ but let’s avoid that distraction about my age for a moment. I was intrigued by this “Today Show” feature because it was a group that empowered people to change their lives right here in my own backyard — or our back waterfront, to be exact. Their slogan says it best, “Building Boats…Building Lives.”
Since I believe that good things attract good people, I became even more enamored with this group when I learned two of my long-time friends are involved with this organization. Kathy Seifert is vice president of development and Kathleen Jones is on the board.
They invited me to be a guest pourer this year at their annual Wine on the Waterfront fundraiser this Saturday, June 3 from 6-8pm. It is a great event with live music, a live and silent auction, and, of course, amazing wine.
Since this time of the year the weather can still be questionable, we decided to show you three great outfits to wear to the event come rain, shine, or chill. The best part is, everything you see here is on sale. You can use all the savings from your fashion purchases to buy a ticket to this great event (detailed information is below). I hope to see you there.
If it’s hot, keep it simple. This layered white sleeveless dress by Rag & Bone is worthy of sunny weather while masking any problem areas you might want to keep under wraps. It’s important to pile on the accessories for such a simple look though to make it appropriate for the event.
Rag & Bone Dress: Original Price $450, Sale Price $315 | Daughter Earrings: $240 (not on sale) | Matine Clutch: $150 (not on sale) | Stuart Weitzman Heels: Original Price $445, Sale Price $312
If it’s cold, you’ll want outerwear of some sort. Katie smartly paired her silk IRO dress with a woven printed and lined jacket also by IRO for added warmth. Sandals and jewelry complete the look.
IRO Dress: Original Price $675, Sale Price $473 | IRO Jacket: Original Price $615, Sale Price $431 | Stuart Weitzman Heels: Original Price $445, Sale Price $312 | Lizzie Fortunato Earrings: $298 (not on sale)
If it rains, you’ll need a protective layer that still looks pulled together. Veronica Beard’s trench has become our go-to for mild weather involving precipitation. Here, Katie styled it with a silk Raquel Allegra “pajama” suit and Stuart Weitzman block heeled sandals.
Veronica Beard Trench: Original Price $750, Sale Price $525 | Raquel Allegra Blouse: Original Price $345, $242 | Raquel Allegra Pants: Original Price $395, $277 | Stuart Weitzman Heels: Original Price $445, Sale Price $312 | Lizzie Fortunato Earrings: $185 (not on sale)
