the making of a mother’s day gift

I have concluded that it takes aging to realize how much our moms unconditionally love us. I think the first moment I understood it was when Blair gave me a visor for Mother’s Day she made as a 3 year old in Montessori school. It was white, had a photo of her on the brim along with stick-on plastic “gems” and a coil adjustable back. I wore it in public. It brought back memories of when my mother would wear a necklace I made for her for Mother’s Day in Sunday School class. It was a wooden square with dried beans glued to it then painted over, as I recall, in some metallic color. She wore it all the time. I thought it was beautiful. When Blair gave me my visor it made me think of that necklace. My mom really had to love me to wear that ugly necklace all the time.

As mothers, we all love getting hand-made gifts. The joy they show as we open them up, beaming with pride, is just the best. Then as they get older and move past finger paint and handprints, it’s fun to see the gifts they pick out in the store. And better yet – it is also great when we get something that dad helped purchase.

This Mother’s Day at The Shoe Hive we will combine those two things–hand-made, child-made gifts in addition to a great opportunity for the kids and Dad to pick out something from the store that’s on your wish list.

Along with our friends at Ivy Lane Linens we are hosting a Mother’s Day event this weekend. Moms can take the morning off and a loved one can bring in your kids for some shopping. There will be craft stations at both Ivy Lane and The Shoe Hive for the little ones along with some snacks. If you have time to stop in before hand, or have time to give us a call, there are “wish lists” you can fill out so you can get the presents you want. We are open normal hours Saturday but the event is 10 to 1!

Looking for a little inspiration? We asked our friends, Alison and Madelyn to share their wish lists with our readers. And, Brad, if you’re reading, here’s mine too…

I spent the first part of my career as a copy-writer who helped elected officials brag about their support for entrepreneurs. Then I decided to get off the printed page and do it myself. The Shoe Hive made a splash on the fashion scene in Washington, and was named the region’s best shoe store in its first year. Fourteen years later, I have tripled the store’s size and also opened a sister store, The Hive. At The Hive, we offer clothing lines that are sophisticated and approachable like Rag & Bone, Tibi, Raquel Allegra, Ulla Johnson and Veronica Beard. We have tried to fill our racks with clothing you will want to wear all the time, elevated basics that are worth the investment.

Heard the buzz? The Shoe Hive & The Hive are a pair of luxury boutiques in Old Town Alexandria. Featuring both big name designers like Rag & Bone and Stuart Weitzman and smaller brands like AGL and L'Agence, our unique selection and impeccable service are what set us apart.
