A Sister Duo for The Ann Mashburn Trunk Show

A few years back, when we were getting ready to host our second Veronica Beard show, I knew I had to pull out all the stops when it came to the models. I called my friends and sister duo, Emily Schell Jones and Evie Schell Cartwright. To date, it is still one of our most popular posts, and it isn’t because of the clothing – it was clearly because of the Schell sisters. I can say with a fair amount of confidence that between the two of them, they know just about everyone in Alexandria. I will try to list just a few of the ways you might know them: Evie has two young girls and just finished her term as Waynewood PTA president, a Beauty Counter Executive Director, a substitute teacher for Fairfax County Schools, and has been active in Junior Friends along with volunteering with many of her kids’ various activities. Emily has been in the fundraising sector for nonprofits for nearly two decades, she recently raised 50 million dollars for The National World War I Memorial in Washington, D.C. Emily has also served as the President of Maury PTA and is on the Alexandria Little League Board. So, besides both working and volunteering for about everything under the sun, the other reason people might know them is because they are just fun and happy people. If we ever have parties again in some hypothetical post-Covid world, and you want to make sure you talk to someone fun, go find one of these ladies. It will 100 percent lead to a lot of laughs.

Fast forward to today, and when I saw the Ann Mashburn trunk show approaching on the calendar, I realized I again needed help showing off the clothing line. These clothes are what I would call ‘happy clothes’ – bright colors and fun patterns that bring a smile to anyone’s face. I mean, aren’t we all ready for some clothes that aren’t loungewear! Ann Mashburn’s style has been described as “a touch tomboy, confidently feminine and totally effortless.” In my opinion, this fits the Schell sisters’ style perfectly. Raised in Pullman, Washington, these ladies have a hint of outdoors to their style (okay, Emily more than Evie) and an ease to dressing that shows that even though they are East Coasters these days, their roots are always in the West.

The rain limited our shoot, but thanks to Shelia Johnson, lending us her house last minute, we got to feature a few great styles sent in just for the trunk show. The two dresses are my favorites, and can we talk about the amazing Lizzie Fortunato accessories? I hope you will stop in, there is so much great stuff that is just here for the weekend. Of course, it is all 20 percent off, and special orders are available. Liz, our representative, will be here part of the day Thursday, April 8, and Friday, April 9, for made-to-order shirting. I spent the first part of my career as a copy-writer who helped elected officials brag about their support for entrepreneurs. Then I decided to get off the printed page and do it myself. The Shoe Hive made a splash on the fashion scene in Washington, and was named the region’s best shoe store in its first year. Fourteen years later, I have tripled the store’s size and also opened a sister store, The Hive. At The Hive, we offer clothing lines that are sophisticated and approachable like Rag & Bone, Tibi, Raquel Allegra, Ulla Johnson and Veronica Beard. We have tried to fill our racks with clothing you will want to wear all the time, elevated basics that are worth the investment.

Heard the buzz? The Shoe Hive & The Hive are a pair of luxury boutiques in Old Town Alexandria. Featuring both big name designers like Rag & Bone and Stuart Weitzman and smaller brands like AGL and L'Agence, our unique selection and impeccable service are what set us apart.
