recently opened restaurant report: mackie’s bar & grille

My love of Alexandria is not a secret. A lot of things happening in our town excite me, but nothing excites me more than the opening of a new store or restaurant.  I often drag my loving fiancé there on opening night so I can marvel at the menu, décor, and the goodies.  Christen, the manager of The Shoe Hive and fellow Alexandria Stylebook writer, and I are constantly going back and forth of new story ideas to keep you readers engaged and informed, and one thing we both immediately jumped on is restaurants.

Let me not call this or future posts “restaurant reviews.” Instead, think more “restaurant report.” Let me also state: I am not a food critic. Or a chef. Not too long ago I burnt off my eye lashes when I opened our gas range. But ladies and gentlemen, I do love food and I do love to eat out, so here goes, the first installment of Recently Opened Restaurant Reports in my favorite town.

Until about a year ago, what Old Town lacked was a great steakhouse.  Who doesn’t crave red meat paired with a smooth red wine on occasion?  This exact craving led me to Mackie’s Bar & Grille not once, but twice last week.

Walking by the restaurant can be deceiving.  It looks like a nice bar with a lounge window seat, but beyond is a door that opens into a quaint, maybe 10-table restaurant that specializes in 30-day, dry-aged steak. Don’t let the word “dry” throw you off though. Cooked medium-rare, it is perfectly moist and melts in your mouth like butter. Our waiter each night was incredibly helpful at pairing a reasonably priced red wine with our meal.

On the night we dined with my family, my college-aged brother Parker and his girlfriend Maddie came along. Maddie *is* a foodie, so I was particularly interested in her thoughts. We started with the Pork Belly and Mackie’s Shrimp: devoured within seconds.  Another standout at dinner was Parker’s meal, Mackie’s Dry-Aged Burger. Topped with aged white cheddar and served on the most amazing bun, it was so incredible it required zero sauces. For dessert we all shared the Key Lime Pot au Crème, a house-made, very fun spin on the traditional key lime pie that I definitely recommend.

Bottom Line: Impressed even the most particular diners and we cannot wait to go back.
