It’s that time of year again! I don’t know about you, but I’m ready to feel that chill in the air. Fall is my favorite season for clothing. So many fun ways to play with pattern, texture, and proportion. I love that menswear-inspired looks are sticking around and so are exaggerated sleeve silhouettes. Here are my favorite trends of the upcoming season — plus some tips on how to mix them into your wardrobe.

The pant suit has definitely been at the forefront of my mind since checking out the Yves Saint Laurent exhibit at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts earlier this month. We are not talking about the rebellion of women in trousers during the 60s and 70s; the imposing “power suit” of the 80s; or the the ill-fitting almost utilitarian pant suits of the 90s. Many of today’s suits are sharp and tailored, but done in viscose and elastane fabrics that stretch and move instead of constrain. This season’s pant suits are as easy as jeans and a cardigan, but endlessly more polished and chic.
P.S. Florals are also huge again this fall. Not sure about going big with floral? Try it as an accessory, like a scarf or a purse.

Red is everywhere this fall. And not necessarily a maroon or darker shade of crimson, but a “power red.” This fall’s red demands to be seen. Designers are featuring the color in head-to-toe monochromatic looks that feel fresh and inspiring. Don’t be shy about the color this season. Although it is easy to do as a shoe or a bag, try injecting some red in clothing like a dress, jacket, or pants.
P.S. Fringe is happening this fall as well. It can often feel boho or country western. Look for it in unexpected places. For example, it takes on a less trendy, but more sophisticated and grown up vibe in a classic piece like this sheath dress.
“It has to be comfortable or I won’t wear it.” This statement is in the top three requirements that come from our clients. We take comfort very seriously and luckily this season, comfort is queen. It’s all about oversize, cozy, and plush sweaters that feel more like a hug than clothing!

P.S. Check out Victorian collars this fall. They are a statement on their own or an unexpected detail layered under a jacket or sweater.

There is a lot to choose from this fall when it comes to fashion inspired by craft and culture. My personal favorite are Fair Isle sweaters. These Highland knits, whether done in in warm rich colors or whimsical brights, are perfect weekend-wear for the season.
P.S. Check out the rich, chocolate brown color of the season. Try it in a texture, like leather or suede, to keep it from feeling dull.
