Play Dinner Work

I am truly obsessed with the owner of Tibi. Her name is Amy Smilovic and she is my favorite person to follow on Instagram. During COVID-19 she’s done business chats, style hacks, and she breaks down how to make sure you are buying the right items (price per wear) and how to wear them different ways. She calls this method “PDW” – which stands for “Play Dinner Work.”

As a store owner, I have always said the worst thing in the world is when someone comes in and says I bought a shirt last year from you and I have never worn it. It makes me think I am not doing my job right. I want customers to wear the things they buy and to buy things they will wear. I feel like I am doing my job right when they say I bought a pair of shoes from you and I wear them all the time. Winning!!

One of the most popular items in my closet, and typically in our store, is blazers. But spring clearly changed that. This fall has been different. I think, as a collective whole, we are trying to get out of our workout clothes and elastic and maybe into some real clothes these days. I believe this is the perfect time to add a new blazer to the mix. Perhaps the designers knew something we didn’t know when they put their coming pieces to factory last winter, but this fall’s styles are a little more casual, a tad bit of a looser fit, and in fabrics that are more breathable and have more movement.

When I wanted to feature blazers and show how to make them go from Play to Work to Dinner, I knew the perfect person to call. Jan Roche has been a loyal customer and friend for a very long time. When the pandemic hit, she would contact me every few days to see how we were doing and to see if I needed any help navigating the PPP process. She did not have time to do this; her job was busier than ever, like many of us. But she always took the time and I will be forever grateful.

Besides being a great person, Jan has great style. Jan is a fellow blazer lover as well. She has also never looked better. Besides working all the time, she is working out all the time with Adrien and Alexandria Wellness. She makes all the clothes we pulled look amazing. Seeing the photos of her in the beautiful Smythe blazer makes me think I need to add it to my collection.

I spent the first part of my career as a copy-writer who helped elected officials brag about their support for entrepreneurs. Then I decided to get off the printed page and do it myself. The Shoe Hive made a splash on the fashion scene in Washington, and was named the region’s best shoe store in its first year. Fourteen years later, I have tripled the store’s size and also opened a sister store, The Hive. At The Hive, we offer clothing lines that are sophisticated and approachable like Rag & Bone, Tibi, Raquel Allegra, Ulla Johnson and Veronica Beard. We have tried to fill our racks with clothing you will want to wear all the time, elevated basics that are worth the investment.

Heard the buzz? The Shoe Hive & The Hive are a pair of luxury boutiques in Old Town Alexandria. Featuring both big name designers like Rag & Bone and Stuart Weitzman and smaller brands like AGL and L'Agence, our unique selection and impeccable service are what set us apart.
