“What makes me feel better when I’m at home? Fresh flowers.”

We’re all spending more time at home than normal, and we’re all a lot more stressed out than normal. You know what makes me feel better when I’m at home? Fresh flowers. I think it’s a trait I got from my mother and grandmother.

For as long as I can remember, I have just loved having fresh flowers in my house. They not only look good and smell great, they also have such a sense of frivolity and urgency to the story they tell, all at the same time, that it translates to me as instant emotional connection. When my husband and I dated long distance, and later worked far apart, he had a set weekly delivery of flowers to me and it never failed to make me feel better about whatever stress I was carrying.

Now, more than ever, it’s a great time to send flowers. Most florists are locally owned businesses. And guess what? The cancellation of large public events like weddings, charity galas, Easter brunches, and the like means a lot of cancelled orders for flowers – orders that will not likely be re-made when the virus ends.

I think we should all take a moment this week to send flowers to someone we love, just to tell them we love them. At the same time, it will let your local florist know that we appreciate them for all they do in our communities.

Shopping for flowers can be done with complete social distancing, all while bringing you closer together with people who are important to you. It’s a great time of year to send irises, tulips, and lilies. So call up our friends at Helen Olivia or our neighbors at The Enchanted Florist, just three doors down from The Shoe Hive.

I spent the first part of my career as a copy-writer who helped elected officials brag about their support for entrepreneurs. Then I decided to get off the printed page and do it myself. The Shoe Hive made a splash on the fashion scene in Washington, and was named the region’s best shoe store in its first year. Fourteen years later, I have tripled the store’s size and also opened a sister store, The Hive. At The Hive, we offer clothing lines that are sophisticated and approachable like Rag & Bone, Tibi, Raquel Allegra, Ulla Johnson and Veronica Beard. We have tried to fill our racks with clothing you will want to wear all the time, elevated basics that are worth the investment.

Heard the buzz? The Shoe Hive & The Hive are a pair of luxury boutiques in Old Town Alexandria. Featuring both big name designers like Rag & Bone and Stuart Weitzman and smaller brands like AGL and L'Agence, our unique selection and impeccable service are what set us apart.
