#fitforlife: hot pilates at mind the mat

It might not look like it, but I actually enjoy working out. From barre to boxing, there aren’t too many gym classes offered that I haven’t tried. So when Stylebook partnered with Fitness on the Run and Mind the Mat and we all agreed to try something new it wasn’t an easy task for me. I have trained at Fitness On The Run for years, and on and off I try to take yoga classes at Mind the Mat. I’ve been through the whole lineup, or so I thought.

But then the #fitforlife list was sent around and there it was, the one thing I haven’t tried: HOT PILATES. Not only have I never tried Hot Pilates, I have never heard of hot pilates.

The lovely Megan Brown teaches a hot pilates class on Fridays at 9:45 that I soon learned has a bit of a cult following. I am not going to lie, I was nervous, but if it could help me look like Megan, I knew I was “all in.”

As I laid out my mat all I could think was: What have I gotten myself into? The room was so hot and everyone around me looked pretty darn fit. I wasn’t sure I could hang with the cult. A few minutes later Megan entered the room and the fun began. I don’t know if I have ever laughed more in a class. Megan is part fitness instructor and part stand up comic. She makes the class fun and you start to forget the pain she is guiding you through. She gives different options for poses for different levels and makes sure we all leave our egos at the door.

The next day my abs reminded me of the class, which to me means it was a success. There is also just something therapeutic about a good sweat, especially in the winter.

So if you are looking for something new to shake up your fitness routine, this is the class for you. Aside from the 9:45 slot, there are tons of additional times. You will not be disappointed.

I will be looking for you on the mat!

I spent the first part of my career as a copy-writer who helped elected officials brag about their support for entrepreneurs. Then I decided to get off the printed page and do it myself. The Shoe Hive made a splash on the fashion scene in Washington, and was named the region’s best shoe store in its first year. Fourteen years later, I have tripled the store’s size and also opened a sister store, The Hive. At The Hive, we offer clothing lines that are sophisticated and approachable like Rag & Bone, Tibi, Raquel Allegra, Ulla Johnson and Veronica Beard. We have tried to fill our racks with clothing you will want to wear all the time, elevated basics that are worth the investment.

Heard the buzz? The Shoe Hive & The Hive are a pair of luxury boutiques in Old Town Alexandria. Featuring both big name designers like Rag & Bone and Stuart Weitzman and smaller brands like AGL and L'Agence, our unique selection and impeccable service are what set us apart.
