Last year for Lent I gave up drinking. I must admit it made me feel great. I slept better, I exercised more, and was just an overall more productive person. And I am not a big drinker. I only drink socially and never drink alcohol in my house unless someone is over for dinner or there is a party at my house — both of which are rare.
Fast forward to this summer, and I pretty much decided to double down and make up for my six weeks of being a teetotaler and cram it all into the past eight weeks. Don’t get me wrong, I have had an amazing summer — click here to see what I mean — but wow did I ever get off my routine. I do not do well without my schedule. The wheels come off and I just spin out of control. I think in the last three weeks I have had pizza for a meal about 10 times.
I am also one of those people who likes to exercise. I am more of a cardio person than weight-lifting, but I do love group classes, especially when I know a friend will be meeting me there. For years, I have gone to Fitness on the Run and Mind the Mat but since Memorial Day I have probably been a total of fours times to both places combined. Much of this has been because of vacation, family travel, and work trips, but even if it’s not due to my slovenliness, numbers are numbers.
Basically, what I am saying is, as the calendar turns to fall, it is time to pull back on the fun reins and get back at it. I feel like so many people are in the same boat. I was talking to Angela, the owner of Bellacara, and she offered the same lament. I love my kids but I need to get their cute little bottoms back in school before mine gets any bigger!
We decided we needed to enlist our friends and Stylebook partners Adrien Cotton of Fitness on the Run and Megan Brown of Mind the Mat to kick us into gear. I don’t know of two people who are more committed to their overall health than these ladies. I have always told them the only advertisements they need are to walk around with t-shirts that say I am 44 or 50 and own a fitness studio, here is my phone number. They are the perfect examples of living healthy lifestyles. You will never hear them talk about a diet; they don’t need one because their regular caloric routine is so good it doesn’t require a temporary shift. They exercise, eat right, and enjoy life.
So for the next 10 weeks they are going to try to teach Angela and me how to be more like them. We will post every couple weeks, share the new healthy habits Adrien and Megan have advised us to incorporate, and keep you up-to-date about how we are doing.
Exercise is first up. It is easier for me to get to their studios but my husband travels and I have a four-day buying trip to NYC so we will both have to figure out how to exercise some at home or take it on the road, but they are here to help.
So here we go. Good-bye summer, hello fall fitness.
