Doing Good In The Neighborhood

We at Kiskadee have a few charitable ventures that we would love some help with! I’m a huge fan of Friends of Guest House. First, I love that they are in the neighborhood. I love supporting local non-profits. Second, I love that it’s about women. They are amazing! If you aren’t familiar with the work they do, in a nutshell, they help formerly incarcerated women get back on their feet. Our part in helping is two-fold. My friend Ava and I co-lead our older daughter’s girl scout troop. I can’t believe this, but we’ve been together as a troop since kindergarten. As a troop, we are collecting items that all women need. If you would like to help, there is a bin outside to collect items. My daughter is in charge of that bin. Other girls in the troop have placed bins in other places to include at school. They are all in charge of collecting items and putting them all together.

The second part involves fashion. We can’t possibly not have that aspect. As it is against the rules for a troop to ask for money for this, I thought we could do it at Kiskadee. I spent some time trying to figure out how to do this. I would love to help outfit these ladies at FOGH… new clothes that fit and are stylish can instantly change a person and boost a spirit. Obviously, in the current pandemic climate, I could use some help here. I thought it would be fun to see if anyone would like to “sponsor” a lady. Basically, for $50 you can sponsor one of the residents, and we at Kiskadee will outfit them. If you are interested in sponsoring a lady, please sign up here.

I will be in contact later on about how to collect the donation. If you’d like to read more about their mission, here is their webpage.

On another note, ever since the early days of the pandemic, we’ve been collecting food for the Grace Episcopal food pantry. Unless the weather is bad, the bin is out. I have a few friends that help run that pantry, and they say they are still giving out up to 300 bags of food a week. I know there is giving fatigue, but the need is still there. They currently need the following items: dried black and red beans (1 lb. packages), tortillas, masa harina, white rice (1 lb. packages), pasta and pasta sauce, canned tomatoes, canned vegetables (corn is popular), canned chicken, and vegetable oil. Plus, new toiletries like toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo, and conditioner.

Thanks so much for your help!
