The 3 B’s (aka 2017 Fall Shoe Trends)

I should start calling this my “Aunt Rosanne” series. When I sit down to write about the biggest shoe trends of each season she always comes to mind. She is my mom’s only sister and has always been into fashion and, true to her small town, southern roots, she takes careful pride in her appearance.

Without fail, I get a call or text at the beginning of the “shopping season” inquiring about what she should expect to see in stores and fashion magazines. Our conversation this year led to a neat little shorthand.

I have been doing this for 14 years and I can say that for this fall’s collections, there were shoes at the market that were like nothing else I have seen. I also can say that when I started in this business I didn’t think designers would bet putting fur on a version of the Adidas athletic slide I wore after lacrosse games in the 1980s, so maybe I’m just not a visionary.

Yes, there are still basics — don’t worry — but if you ask me this fall is all about the 3 B’s: buttons, brocade, and bows. Sometimes there is even a combination of the two.

Butter, a long-time Shoe Hive favorite, has delivered once again at upgrading work basics with gold button details. Yes, they are still a timeless classic but with a subtle twist that you probably don’t have in your closet.

Tory Burch and AGL aren’t as subtle. If you are like me and some days you end up running around in black exercise pants, all you need to do is put on the black and gold brocade slide or sneaker from Tory Burch and you will feel a little more “dressed.” Want to add a little splash to your flats? AGL has added brocade, exaggerated bows, and gold studs.

Really every designer has something to offer from these three trends. If you come looking this fall, I don’t think what you see will be like anything else you have in your shoe wardrobe.
