weekend escape

Being snowed in is super fun…until it’s not. The children being out of school for so many days meant loads and loads of family quality time, which was great…until…let’s just say cabin fever is real. Now you, like me, just might be ready for a little break. While a tropical isle sounds lovely, it’s probably not in the cards in the next few weeks. Instead, I’ll stick close by for a much-needed change of scenery. Here’s how to pack for a local getaway.

Spa trip to Salamander

If you haven’t yet made the trip to Middleburg to enjoy the amazing spa at Salamander…well, after hours of shoveling early this week, I can’t imagine a better time. Packing for this getaway is pretty simple: a pretty canvas bag (monogrammed, of course, similar one here) to tote a stack of shelter magazines, a nice candle or potpourri for in-room relaxing, and a yummy gray cashmere-blend throw to cozy up in. Super-soft-but-still-pretty pajamas with matching ruffle robe feel a little more civilized than the Snowzilla-mandated yoga-pants-all-day-every-day uniform.

Family trip to a friend’s river house

Presidents’ Day is just around the corner, and the long weekend is the perfect time for a low-key road trip with the family. We are planning a quick visit to see some dear family friends at their river house. It will likely be too chilly to venture out on the boat to fish – although these anglers are hardy, maybe the husbands and the kids will – so we’ll plan to enjoy good old fashioned fun: games (pro tip: Camp is a great game for all ages), Jenga, LEGOs, and, for the grown-ups…wine!

Even if it is a laid back visit, we won’t arrive empty handed. Simple but thoughtful gifts like monogrammed cocktail napkins or paper dinner or bar napkins make lovely hostess gifts. And the linen wine bag is a nice extra touch.

Safe travels!
