I love a workout where I know exactly how hard to push myself, one where I trust the instructor to both coach and motivate me, and where I walk out knowing I was challenged in all the right ways.

I developed the methodology behind our rides at Ascend Cycle with this in mind – I wanted to empower all riders, regardless of athletic ability or motivation, to understand their body and learn how strong they truly can be. Instead of chasing a number on a screen or a goal on a board, I wanted our riders to connect with their body and discover their untapped potential. But for our data-driven riders, we have performance metrics available after the ride to track improvements in strength and stamina over time.

Most importantly, I wanted to create a workout that is proven effective.

The Ascend methodology is based in the exercise science behind interval training. Our classes are not 50 minutes of steady-state cardio. Instead, we work between aerobic and anaerobic zones – Ascend’s training and peak zones – using intervals of varying length and intensity. This results in increased aerobic capacity and the ability to recover more quickly after intense drills. In other words, we train you to be able to work at a higher intensity for a longer period of time. So, whatever the goal – weight loss, setting a new PR, or simply being able to chase your kids around the block – our riders achieve it at Ascend.

But beyond that, the Ascend method is based on teaching our riders to own their workout. Our instructors are both coaches and motivators. We empower riders to understand how they should be feeling in both their training and peak zones using physiological cues. Instead of simply trying to keep up with the instructor, our classes encourage our riders to feel the beat of the music, and to challenge themselves to ride into and out of these zones.

Why do we do it this way?

We do it this way because it works – and because there is nothing better than the feeling of hitting a peak drill perfectly timed with a beat drop, or seeing our riders pedaling in sync with the rhythm as we climb a hill together. There’s a huge reward in witnessing riders recognize their fitness potential as they progress every ride. And that’s what our studio is all about.
