what to wear: classics revisited, part three

Mia Farrow may have pioneered a hair revolution, but for today, we’re going to focus on her skin. This photo is a perfect example of using one’s natural pigmentation to great advantage–her freckles really show, and she looks better for it. It makes me sad to see so many people who have freckles try to cover them with heavy makeup. We should all be celebrating our skin’s natural pigmentations! (Not blemishes, though. We don’t celebrate those.)

Step One: Moisturize. We can’t have a skin-centric look without great hydration!

Step Two: Sweep a soft ivory eye shadow all over your lids. No need to completely blank out the canvas with eye base for this one. Apply a soft brown or taupe eyeliner on both upper and lower lash lines. If necessary, smudge into the lashes to even out the line. T LeClerc’s “Topaze” is a fabulous option for this.

Step Three: Conceal your under eye with the lightest coverage concealer you can get away with. Because this look doesn’t have heavy foundation coverage, the under eye coverage should be comparable so your look flows.

Step Four: Use your fingers or a beautyblender to put a sheer wash of tinted moisturizer or another light foundation over the places you really need it. The goal here is simply to even the tone, not to cover your skin. If you need a little more coverage, but still want to keep the effect sheer and natural, Kevyn Aucoin Sensual Skin Fluid Foundation is amazing–sheer-medium coverage, and completely weightless.

Step Five: Using your ring finger, pat a little bit of blush over your apples, heading up and out toward the hairline. For the most natural look, get a cream blush or gel stain (only on very moisturized skin for the stain!) that coordinates with your natural lip color. These are double-duty products, so feel free to carry that cheek color right on down to your lips.

Step Six: Use a lengthening and thickening formula of mascara. An awesome one for a buildable false lash effect is Kevyn Aucoin The Essential Mascara.

Pair this look with incredible trendsetting ability and a steel-nerved viewing of Rosemary’s Baby.
