what to wear: classics revisited, part one

Old school film and fashion stars really had a good thing going. The looks we consider “classic” were new and edgy and modern for them. That said, they’ve become classics for a reason. We can’t get enough of the red lip, the winged eye liner, the perfect gamine crop paired with a youthful glow on the cheek, the California-girl bronze, or the heavy-lidded eye with a nearly-nude face and fabulous bed head.

When it comes to choosing a Hepburn, I’ve always been a Katharine fan. I think few people have been able to carry off the same strong grace she did, and have you seen those cheekbones? Come now.

The iconic Katharine look is a bold lip, an exaggerated cheekbone, and a bit of extra length on the lashes.

Step one: Start with a flesh-tone, matte eyelid primer, applied from lashes to brow bone and blended out well. Apply a deep purple cream eyeshadow along the lash line and smooth it out up to the crease, so the color is concentrated at the lashes. We like Jouer’s Crème Eyeshadow Crayon in “Renaissance,” because it has a gorgeous gold undertone to flatter every eye color.

Step two: Put on two coats of a lengthening mascara, like Rilastil Long Lash or Smashbox Hyperlash. The key to this eye look is long lashes, not necessarily a ton of them. Then, apply two or three individual lash flares to your outer corners with a latex based glue. This will help enhance the length without adding too much extra volume.

Step three: Conceal that under eye! Then dust a lightly luminous, cream- or gold-colored shadow just beneath the lower lashes and into the inner corner. Finish the eye with one coat of mascara on your lower lashes.

Step four: Use a matte-finish foundation all over. Suck in your cheeks and apply Kevyn Aucoin Sculpting Powder in Medium in the hollow, blending so it looks like a natural shadow, not like a streak of darkness. Use a touch of a terra cotta toned blush just under the apple of the cheek. T. LeClerc “Pêche Veloutée” is a favorite of ours.

Step five: Smooth a creamy terra cotta lipstick on, all the way to the outer edges of your lips. Lining is optional but not necessary for this look.

Step six: Finish everything by touching up your brows with a powder-based pencil, and you’re ready to roll, vintage-style!
