what to wear: classics revisited, part five

Who can top America’s very own princess, Grace Kelly? Just about no one, that’s who, so we’re ending this series with the epitome of high-brow beauty.

Step One: Apply eye base, and top with a matte cream shadow. From lashes to crease, apply a matte deep taupe shadow. Blend well into the crease, but don’t put on a darker crease color. The color here is focused on the lower lid. The Smashbox Full Exposure palette has several shades that will work for this purpose, as well as some others to get this effect but to a lesser extent.

Step Two: Line the top lashes with black liquid liner. If you are comfortable, add a small wing to the outer corner. If you’re not comfortable, don’t worry–you can still capture the spirit of the look, if not the letter.

Step Three: Apply matte-finish foundation all over. Stila Stay-All-Day really does stay all day, and comes with a corresponding concealer in the cap. For all day staying power I also love Smashbox Studio Skin–goes on seamlessly with a beautyblender!

Step Four: Use a warm rose blush high on the cheekbone, and blend down to a slight curve under the apple of the cheek. We’re getting dangerously close to 1980s stripy blush territory, here, so apply with a light hand, and build as needed. On the apple of the cheek, use a fluffy brush to apply a luminizing powder. Kevyn Aucoin Candlelight is a store favorite here at Bellacara!

Step Five: These eyebrows are no joke. Use a brow powder/wax duo like Vincent Longo Brow Powder and Pomade. The pomade helps to really grab the color and make it long-wearing. If you want to take it even further, top with a clear brow gel, like Blinc’s Clear Mousse or Jouer’s Brow Fix.

Step Six: If these eyebrows are no joke, this lip is dead serious. First, exfoliate well. Draw in your shape and color the lip with a waxy lip pencil–Lipstick Queen Coral is perfect for this look. Top the liner with Kevyn Aucoin The Expert Lip in “Eliarice,” then perfect the line again with the lip liner. The double lining provides more coverage, better shaping, and extra wear.

Step Seven: Lengthening mascara. Peter Thomas Roth Lashes to Die For is one of our most popular lengthening and defining mascaras, and I’m quite a fan myself.

Pair this look with impossibly well-fitting silk tops, an old-fashioned roller set, and a royal air.
