what to wear: two-way travel dress

The key to packing successfully is putting together a capsule wardrobe for the trip that can be mixed and matched and worn in various ways for different events and varying weather forecasts. I’m spending this week in Michigan for a trip that will include activities ranging from attending a wedding, visiting with friends, family time, a professional meeting and relaxing at the lake house. I need versatile outfits that can be layered up for cooler evening temps and that can be worn for varying levels of casual and dressier events.

2014 7.20 Look of the Day

This maxi dress fits the bill. I love maxi dresses for trips where the weather fluctuates because they’re cool enough for warm afternoons but the long length will keep you a bit more covered when the temperature drops later in the day. And this neutral gray is perfect for pairing with just about any accessories or layering pieces you’ve packed. I would wear this one by itself during the day for walking around town or lounging on the deck paired with a straw fedora, pendant necklace and cross body bag. For evening, I’d layer it up with a scarf and soft cardigan (love the leather detail on the sleeves of this one!). I could even make this dress work for the wedding paired with a statement necklace, piles of bangles, heels and a metallic clutch. You can’t get much more versatile than that!

This is such a great idea – and so cute! I love the idea of using one dress and thinking strategically about pulling different outfits from it for not only different events, but different temperatures! xo

  2. Thanks Kelley! I’ve been thinking of other items that I pack regularly that can be worn in different ways as well. My other top items are skinny jeans, a leather jacket and a printed blouse, all of which can be dressed up or down and layered up in different ways. I love the puzzle of packing!
