Upholstery Sale Design: Regan Billingsley

As promised, we are highlighting some of our favorite interior designers over the next few weeks as we celebrate our semi-annual upholstery sale. First up is the mad talented Regan Billingsley. Regan is a DMV native having grown up in Chevy Chase. She studied design at the prestigious Pratt Institute in Brooklyn and worked with top designers and architects in Los Angeles and New York City before starting her own practice in 2013. A consummate professional with an eye for all the details (as you’ll see below), Regan is a true pleasure to work with. Her easy-going and genuine personality is a delight. I’m pleased once again to introduce you to and share the work of our friend, Regan Billingsley.

“We always start every project by getting to know our clients. We want their homes to look gorgeous and also support their lifestyle and wellbeing. One of the biggest shifts we’ve seen in the last year is the demand to use every square inch of our homes efficiently, which we love because we want our clients’ homes to work for them. Space is at a premium and rooms need to be multifunctional so you can live, work, and (eventually) entertain with ease.

With that in mind, we approached this design by thinking about the personality that would inhabit it. We’ve gotten several requests for transforming traditional dining rooms, especially those that rarely get used, into sitting rooms that can be enjoyed every day of the year. We thought about a homeowner who would want a room that equally supported lounging with a good book as it would hosting a work Zoom call.

Layers are key to ensuring a room is inviting. We start with the larger items – upholstery and rugs – to create a cozy, comfortable foundation. Then we layer lighting through lamps and candles, visual statements such as an unexpected accent chair, clever storage, and soft textiles. Now that we’re in the midst of winter, we wanted to find a creative way to bring the outdoors in through natural textiles and earthy colors. The overall intent was soft and warm while maintaining our signature style for mixing and matching color, scale, and pattern.”

  • The latest from Amy
Owner Amy Rutherford started Red Barn because she wanted to deliver a service — to provide both old and new in one place. No longer will busy shoppers be limited to reproductions or forced to shop multiple flea markets for the look or gifts they want. The trick in blending old and new, vintage and modern, classic and quirky, is balance. And Amy’s knack for mixing rustic antiques with urban chic has created a look that is both fresh and familiar.

Red Barn Mercantile opened its doors in September 2007 with a single vision in mind: providing old and new to offer our customers signature whole-room designs at great prices.

We’re more than a furniture boutique and provide more personalized service than a big box retailer. We work hard to bring you the highest quality furniture and gifts, the most unique conversation starters, wall hangings and accent pieces, whether they come from off-the-beaten-track flea markets, or the latest designers.
