This past runway season, we saw some bold lip/eye combinations. For years, we’ve heard that playing up your eyes and lips together is the recipe for a bad makeup look, but that doesn’t have to be true! Now, for daily wear — say, heading to work, the grocery store, the park with the kids — maybe it’s best to have a single standout feature in your look. But if you’re heading out for the evening, why not get a little more adventurous?
The Skeptic
Start small. Stick with a soft, beige or pale grey crease color for the eyes, and simply use your black or charcoal eyeliner pencil to create the smudged-out smokiness. Rather than aiming for a full-bodied red lipstick, try a semi-sheer red, like Lipstick Queen Saint Red. This will ease you into the look without making you hyper-aware that you’re stepping outside the type of one-feature amplification you’re used to.
The Practiced Hand
If you’re already into makeup, you have probably worn this killer combo before. Instead of trying the same old, same old, and wearing a red lip and smoky eye, try integrating a little glitter into your smoked eye look with Stila Magnificent Metals Glitter and Glow Liquid Eye Shadow and switching up your lip to something poppy-er, like Smashbox Always On Liquid Lipstick in Baja Bound.
The Free Spirit
Get outside the box of smoky grays + red lips and try something a little more offbeat. Enhance eyes with Kevyn Aucoin The Defining Navy Palette. This beautiful combination of blues and peachy champagnes takes us out of the realm of 80’s flashbacks and into the world of magical eye adventures. Finish your look with a creamy lipstick, like the universally flattering Kevyn Aucoin The Expert Lip in Wild Orchid.
