Super Simple Super Bowl Party

The Patriots take on the Falcons this Sunday in the Super Bowl, the one day of football everyone watches…even if it’s just for the commercials.  Now I like football.  I went to the University of Oklahoma where football is a religion and you’re practically issued season tickets when you register for classes.  While I am in no way an expert on the sport, I certainly enjoy a good Super Bowl.  And this year should not disappoint.

If you’re planning a party might I suggest a few things?  First, a football pool. I love a little friendly competition, so when my favorite team isn’t playing in the big game – this is fun even if they are! – then a football pool feeds my competitive nature.  It’s easy to do and a quick search on Pinterest found this free printable to make it even easier.  Simply let participants put their name in a box.  Each box corresponds to the last digit of the final score for each team.  If your name is in the right box, then you win.  Now, we don’t condone gambling, but if you are so inclined, consider taking donations per space and the winner gets to donate the pot to his or her favorite charity.

Or make it a friendly wager and award the winner with our version of the game ball, the Handsome Dan football from Leatherhead.

Second, I suggest ice cold beer opened by one of our fun bottle openers and then poured into one of our “Beer Me” glasses, both available at the store.  Keep the drinks limited to non-alcoholic and one or two alcoholic options.  Too many choices are too overwhelming.  I suggest an IPA from Port City Brewing to help root on your team.

Finally, I believe the Super Bowl and chili go hand in hand, so why not whip up a batch with all the fixin’s.  My favorite chili is a white bean and chicken chili from St. Michael’s Alley restaurant in Tulsa, Oklahoma. It is ridiculously easy to make and so much fun to eat.  Add or eliminate as much heat as your taste buds will allow.  You can make it ahead or that day, whatever is most convenient.

Serve the chili in one of our Alexandria mugs, top with any combination of sour cream, guacamole, red onions, Monterrey Jack cheese, and cornbread, and enjoy!

Ingredients

2 yellow onions, chopped

5 cloves garlic, finely chopped

2 pounds cooked chicken, chopped

6 1-pound cans great Northern beans (or Navy beans)

1 4-ounce can chopped green chilies

3 cups chicken broth

1/3 cup chopped jalapenos

2 teaspoons cayenne pepper

1T cumin

1T Tabasco sauce

1T Worcestershire sauce

1 16-ounce can chopped tomatoes, drained

Salt and pepper, to taste

2 teaspoons oregano

Sauté onions and garlic until onions are clear. Add remaining ingredients and cook on medium heat, stirring every 10 minutes or so until mixture is hot and well-blended, about 45 minutes.

Red Barn Mercantile opened its doors in September 2007 with a single vision in mind: providing old and new to offer our customers signature whole-room designs at great prices.
