My second job out of college was as a junior interior designer at a commercial design firm in D.C. On my lunch break, I would sometimes head over to a chic and sophisticated boutique on Connecticut Avenue, Betsy Fisher, to take in all the beautiful clothing. I purchased my first two-piece suit there. It was a major expenditure for me, which also required alterations to the pants. I wholeheartedly committed to the process and remember feeling like a million bucks each and every time I wore it. That was the beginning of investment shopping for me, too. Even in my twenties, I understood the value of purchasing a suit that was of a higher quality and was able to wear it for many years. In fact, the jacket stayed with me until roughly three years ago! It’s safe to say, I retained my cost per wear. 🙂
This season suits are having a major moment. If your last purchase of a suit was in the late 80s, it might be time to take a look at the new versions of this classic ensemble. I’ve edited out many a dated suit set from the dark closet confines of the DMV. Holding onto an old suit to “cover” that area in your wardrobe does not necessarily translate to something that is useful. The updated suit has a little more swag and personality than the suits the past.
