Ok, so I happen to live in London, but who knew we would be sitting at Centre Court watching three top players in the world (Federer, Serena, and Murray) at Wimbledon on the 4th of July!? What a treat!
Instead of taking the westbound District Line on the tube, we rang up a black cab from our Halo app, and 20 minutes later we were dropped off at the entrance gate to The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. And if that were not enough excitement, one could always return three days later to see the Duchess of Cambridge make her way to the Royal Box to watch Serena play against Russian Elena Vesnina. And just like the restaurants and shops around London who went all out with their decor in celebration of Wimbledon, Kate was no exception…
Wearing the colors of a tennis ball, Kate wore a “recycled” yellow shift dress with white paneled inserts on the skirt and arms. Yes, recycled…as she often does with her clothing choices, Kate repeated a dress (by designer Roksanda for £900) which she first wore on a visit to Sydney during a 2014 tour. Roksanda Illincic, a designer born in Serbia, is known for her clean, sophisticated color block designs and unfussy aesthetic style.
The Duchess also chose the same earrings worn to the previous evening’s Art Fund awards. It appears Coco Blanca has company when it comes to an affinity for baroque pearls, as Kate chose to wear a gorgeous pair of baroque pearl and Swarovski crystal earrings in 18kt gold vermeil over sterling silver by Soru Jewellery. And on her arm, she wore her Ballon Blue watch by Cartier. But for her shoes, Kate opted not to go with her usual LK Bennet nude pumps, but chose the Malory pump in nude kid by Rupert Sanderson ($675). And to complete her Wimbledon ensemble, the Duchess carried a textured white leather bag with dark green piping (Quincy Leather Tote £995) by Victoria Beckham, a designer new to Kate’s wardrobe.
Inspired by tennis and the excitement of Wimbledon, I couldn’t think of a better place to celebrate the evening than dinner at Ristorante Frescobaldi, where they creatively transformed their dining room into an elegant Wimbledon playground with their tennis-inspired decor. What looked like lemon trees at first glance were actually tennis balls hanging from tree branches with transparent wire. Oh these clever Brits! Well, Italian Brits!
Even though I live in London and should be cheering for Murray, I must admit, I was so very sad to see Federer lose against Raonic, looking completely devastated in the next day’s Daily Mail. Yes, I’m half Swiss, but what fun it would have been to watch Federer win his eighth Wimbledon title to break the tie he shares with Pete Sampras.
With the BBC Sport app downloaded to my iPhone, and the live coverage on the Precor Elliptical machine next door at Grace (more on Grace in future post), I was never without a play.
