the staycation

We are nearing the end of summer. The other day, I even heard a customer bemoaning the summer days we have left, impatient for sweaters and such. If your major vacations are behind you but you are still in need of a little R&R, consider a staycation.

While this notion is not an old one, it’s growing in popularity. It’s an easy and inexpensive way to tide you over between vacations and enjoy the things that are closest to home!

****Local Activities

First, there is paddle boarding on the Potomac! Boat in DC is the company with which I have a season pass. Pay a visit to the Key Bridge Boathouse, National Harbor and take in the monuments. Paddle boarding is one of my favorite activities–alone or with friends. It’s a relaxing and leisurely way to exercise. Maybe the only relaxing and leisurely way to exercise…

Give restaurant hopping a try! Select a neighborhood–Shirlington, Old Town, Del Ray–and grab a drink and an appetizer at each one. Work your way down the street, stopping at the restaurants that look appetizing to you. You’ll end up trying new places to dine, and might even find a new favorite!

Menus

Take a midnight stroll by the monuments. And if you can’t make it until midnight, just wait long enough for the sun to set and the monuments to light up. And if you’re not into the idea of strolling, grab a friend and power walk–it’ll still be a nice change of scenery.

Pay a visit to the National Harbor Wheel. I haven’t been yet myself, but I’m sure the view is spectacular!

****Day trips

Annapolis is always a great choice when you need a real getaway but don’t want to spend hours in the car. Take a sailing lesson, explore the history of the town, do a little shopping. I always find something fun to do in this cute little town!

Don’t miss out on the Leesburg Vineyards. I love wine, and I especially love trying it at the source, knowing where it came from, and hearing its story. Whether you love the end result or not, it always tastes a little better and the experience is made by learning the wine’s journey to your glass. You might also want to consider booking a room at a B&B nearby after all that wine tasting!

Baltimore: Go to the aquarium! See an orioles game! And if you’re a fan of risotto, you have to dine at Joe Squared Pizza! After all, Baltimore’s only a 45-minute drive from Alexandria and the risotto is really great.

Sarah–Speaking of sweaters, can you make a recommendation for repair of those teeny moth holes that sometimes appear?
I also have a summer knit top that came back from the drycleaner with a tiny hole (that I didn’t realize until after wearing it)
I know the Stylebook has made great suggestions for shoe and leather repair. What about fabric repair?

    Thank you!
