As a personal stylist, I have to know what trends will be hitting the stores well before they actually do so we know what to shop for our clients. Watching what was coming down the runway last year for the spring 2018 season made my love of fashion even greater, because they were really quite beautiful. With colorful clothes that took us off into another universe, kaleidoscopes of rainbow hues, over-the-top texture, and polka dots, the theme is joyous and uplifting. I asked the super stylish Sarah Bayot, local jewelry designer of Kicheko Goods, to model the top trends you need to stock your wardrobe with this season.
Floral prints and romantic botanical patterns are synonymous with spring, but this year polka dots have already proven to be the rival look worn by the best dressed, most notably in a monochromatic way. But if you associate polka dots with Minnie Mouse or the party dresses you wore as a little girl, it’s time to rethink the surprisingly versatile print.
Both American- and London-based designers have taken a liking to handkerchief hems for spring. Comfort is the name of the game when it comes to spring styles, and you have to admit, there’s something about an uneven hem that feels effortlessly flirty and easy to throw on. Asymmetrical skirts are great transitional pieces, as they can be simple but still add a little something to an outfit.
The 80s were alive and kicking on the runways for Spring/Summer 18. Another face (more like North Face, in fact) of the simmering 80s theme: bold and bright sportswear. That’s right, fashion fans – the shellsuit is back! The best way to carry off this trend is to dilute heavily. Be creative and mix and match them with the less sporty items in your closet, think distressed boyfriend jeans and sneakers.
Transparency is a coveted trait; that fact was clear in collections this spring. From the barely-there wispy dresses to sheer plastic trench coats, opacity is no longer a requirement for clothing. From tulle to mesh to net, multi-layered to super simple, the sheer trend has many guises.
