Small Business Saturday at Red Barn Mercantile & Penny Post

To all of you who frequent Alexandria Stylebook’s businesses and the other local businesses in your neighborhood, thank you. From the bottom of each of our hearts, thank you. Small Business Saturday is our love letter to you. It’s our opportunity to celebrate how much you mean to us. For it’s you who allows us to provide for our families and contribute to our communities. This Small Business Saturday we have several fun things lined up for you at both stores. Here’s the plan…

Red Barn Mercantile

Bloody Mary tasting: We will be kicking off Small Business Saturday with two of our favorite Bloody Mary mixes – D.C.’s own Gordy’s Pickle Jar and Chicago’s Lillie’s Q.  Taste a little of each, cast your vote for your favorite, and pick up a jar for Christmas morning. From 10am-noon.

A White House Christmas book signing with Laura Dowling: I first met Laura Dowling, former chief White House florist, when we worked together at The Nature Conservancy more than 15 years ago. She was a fledgling floral designer and I was a daydreamer, plotting to open my own store one day. With our dear friend, Lisa Riordan, we started having monthly inspirational dinners to plan for our creative futures. Who knew those little dinners would bring us to this Saturday. Ten years in business and two stores for me and six years at the White House, a world speaking tour, and her second book for Laura. I hope you will join us from noon-2 pm tomorrow when Laura will be on hand to sign her second book, A White House Christmas.

Extra-special gift for the first 50 customers: Our extraordinary vendor One Canoe Two has given us a lovely gift to share with you.  The first 50 customers who make a purchase on Small Business Saturday will receive a box of One Canoe Two’s “Prairie Summer Stationery.”

Rug Sale Nov. 22 to Nov. 28: Dash and Albert is offering 20 percent off their entire line, as well as Pinecone Hill. We will be doing the same! Take 20 percent off all in-stock and special order rugs, bedding, bags, and blankets from both companies. The new introductions are AMAZING!

Penny Post

Sugarfina Candy Tasting: We will have four of our favorite Sugarfina candies on hand for you to taste.  Stop by and try Sugarfina’s Champagne Bears, But First, Rosé Roses, Single Malt Scotch Cordials, and Maple Bourbon Caramels. Yum!

Appointed Trunk Show: Washington, D.C.’s own Appointed brand of notebooks will be giving our customers free monogramming and a special gift with every Appointed purchase. Pick out your favorite notebook – lined, grid, or blank in a whole slew of colors – and we will order it for you in your initials or the lucky duck who gets one from you this holiday season!

Postcard Pop Up: We are super-excited about this year’s big event – our Penny Post Postcard Pop Up! (I love alliteration.) In collaboration with Visit Alexandria, we will hosting a tent where you can send a holiday greeting from Alexandria to your loved ones, a postcard with your child’s Christmas list to Santa, or a wishlist of your favorite things from your favorite Alexandria boutiques to someone who loves you. The tent will be open from 11am to 4pm across the street from Penny Post on the Northeast corner of S. Fayette and King. It’s a fun way to spread holiday cheer!

Red Barn Mercantile + Penny Post

Gift With Purchase: At Red Barn we will be giving away our anniversary magnet created by paper artist Annie Howe with every purchase.  And, at Penny Post we will be giving away an Alexandria postcard writing kit. These are  two reminders of how special Alexandria is to us all.

Raffle Drawings: Enter to win one of many prizes ranging from our favorite dish towels from local artist Emily Dere to Appointed notebooks to a new rug from Dash and Albert. We will be drawing prizes all day long so watch our Insta- stories @redbarnmerc and @shoppennypost!

FREE PARKING! Yes, it’s true.  There will be free meter parking Saturday and Sunday!

We look forward to serving you this holiday season. Thank you for your continued support and Happy Holidays, everyone!

  • The latest from Amy
Owner Amy Rutherford started Red Barn because she wanted to deliver a service — to provide both old and new in one place. No longer will busy shoppers be limited to reproductions or forced to shop multiple flea markets for the look or gifts they want. The trick in blending old and new, vintage and modern, classic and quirky, is balance. And Amy’s knack for mixing rustic antiques with urban chic has created a look that is both fresh and familiar.

Red Barn Mercantile opened its doors in September 2007 with a single vision in mind: providing old and new to offer our customers signature whole-room designs at great prices.

We’re more than a furniture boutique and provide more personalized service than a big box retailer. We work hard to bring you the highest quality furniture and gifts, the most unique conversation starters, wall hangings and accent pieces, whether they come from off-the-beaten-track flea markets, or the latest designers.
