the silk saver

Part of my job as a stylist involves being a resource to others. Obviously clients utilize my knowledge in regards to their wardrobe issues, but I also have an opportunity to brainstorm with colleagues as their own journeys unfold. Gretchen Neels and I met when she was running a J.HIlburn workshop for new stylists two years ago. Our paths continued to cross over the last couple of years at events and each time I was impressed by her ability to engage others.

About 3 or 4 months ago, I ran into Gretchen and she shared that she had stumbled onto a new business venture. It had all started with a spot. Not just any old spot, but a spot on one of her beloved investment items – a raw silk suit.

Gretchen asked me if I would try a bottle (which she graciously gave me) and I stuck it in my bag. I pride myself on being able to get spots out of clothing. It’s one of my gifts. However, there are times when something very stubborn refuses to budge or you drop your turmeric tea bag on the cloth upholstery of your husband’s car. There are no Oxyclean soaks for car seat cushions. Eager to test Silk Saver, I pulled the small spray bottle out of my bag and followed Gretchen’s instructions (the tapping is key). Indeed, it lifted the spot off the cushion! The bottle remains in my bag and another resides in my styling kit. Love this stuff but I also love that it’s a product created by a friend and colleague.

Gretchen has been taking her product around and reaching out to larger media outlets for exposure. Even national television correspondents are taking a closer look at this great fashion problem solver! In the meantime, she asked me to whom she should reach out for store placement. I suggested Kiskadee – Darby and Neil sell their fair share of silk tops, dresses and men’s ties so this was a no brainer. This past week, the first group of Silk Saver bottles landed on Mount Vernon Avenue!

Alexandria Stylebook is a dedicated effort by a group of business women in our area to enrich our community. Being able to share viable solutions with viewers is one aspect of what we strive to offer. We have an outstanding editor who never ceases to amaze me with the hours she spends behind the scenes organizing what you see each week. The founding members have all supported me in my own efforts to grow my brand as well as many of the sponsors and fellow stylist, Cathy Starnes. Women supporting women in their efforts is a most rewarding act. It’s the small choices that we make that help others accomplish their dreams.

There are lots of DIY ways to take on stains but consider letting one hand help another by supporting a local Alexandria businesswoman. Silk Saver is convenient and may save one of your investment pieces – the one where your dry cleaner failed!

Get thee to Kiskadee!
