rules to wearing prints

Christine: Is it true that if you’re short you should wear smaller prints? Or is that a dated rule?

Cathy, Style Speaks: Don’t worry too much about which prints you ‘should’ or ‘shouldn’t’ wear based on your height; the scale of print you wear will be dictated more by how curvy you are. Most women can wear larger prints if you understand your shape. Be aware of the effect different prints are going to have on you and then, make your own decision about what you feel good in and the look you want to create. In general, smaller scale, subtle prints are going to have a minimizing effect on curves while larger scale, bold prints are going to enhance curves.

If you’re feeling like a large print is overwhelming your figure, break it up with a solid like a wide belt or blazer. Or, wear the print on either the top or bottom, rather than both, and pair it with a solid color pulled from the print (tip: wear the print on whichever half of you is less curvy; if you’re busty, try a printed skirt, if you’re curvier on bottom, choose a printed top). Look for large scale prints in tailored shapes, as opposed to flowy ones that can end up looking tent-like. Have fun experimenting!
