relief for the wardrobe blahs

Everyone gets a case of the wardrobe blahs. It can be especially noticeable at the cusp of a seasonal change. We may be so sick of wearing the same “old” clothes that we get an almost uncontrollable urge to spend, spend, spend on anything new. But this is when you need to be cautious. Splurging on an entire new wardrobe may not be right thing to do.

Surprised? While it may be easy to think that dumping the old and hauling in the new is the only answer, there are other ways to manage the case of the blahs. With a little strategy and prep, you can make more strategic purchases for the new season and have a higher chance of achieving wardrobe success.

Start by investigating the new season. Get a sense for what’s out there so you can make smart decisions about what to add to your wardrobe. Pull out looks from magazines, create a Pinterest board, spend an afternoon window shopping and trying new things on, browse catalogs.

Then, review your closet. Read through your notes from last spring (I recommend keeping an ongoing list of items you’d like to add to your wardrobe). Put together some potential looks for the new season and see what’s missing that could have you using more of the wardrobe you already have.

Next, come up with a plan for ways to remove the blahs without spending a bundle. Ideas include: shopping for shoes and handbags to lighten up a look for the new season, focus on a certain color that you noticed in stores this season and would make a great addition to your wardrobe, find a new accessory from the latest trends that will make your outfits look new, explore a new silhouette that you haven’t tried before.

Finally, it’s time to do some shopping. Start your prep work now so that, in a few weeks, when the stores are brimming with spring merchandise, you’ll have a plan in place to begin your shopping for the season. You’ll get the most out of your budget and your current wardrobe.
