Pilates in Paradise 2

I grew up a Navy Brat (or as my grandmother would always say, “Navy Junior”) and was fortunate to live in cool coastal places as a kid.  Looking back now I can’t believe I actually got to live in Bermuda.  But of course as a young teen I took it for granted at times and considered myself “living on a rock” in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.  I guess any kid would feel that way with only one TV station and no pizza places.  But just like the plot line on the show Lost, I now long to be back on that rock, that beautiful, quaint, proper, and brilliantly British island.

Several years ago I made a pact with myself to go back every year and take the family.  Eventually that morphed into another idea:  What if I could introduce my beloved Mind the Mat community to my beloved favorite home town?  Since Mind the Mat does not shy away from a good opportunity for a retreat, Pilates in Paradise was born!  Our next excursion is July 28-August 1: Bermuda Pilates & Mindfulness Retreat.  We still have spots left!  Come play in the clear turquoise water and perform your teaser on the pink-sanded beaches.  Take a look at the details here.

Last summer was our first official Bermuda Pilates & Mindfulness Retreat.  I teamed up with my BFF Gina, The Mindful Junkie — you may remember her from her Street Style post or from The Shoe Hive’s Mindful Mondays series; she’s quite shy and really no fun at all.  We put together a five-day, four-night fun-in-the-island-sun Pilates romp last July.  A good group of Mind the Matters and Mindful Junkies joined us.  Take a look at some of our adventures:

Megan Brown, physical therapist, Pilates instructor, mother and co-founder of Mind the Mat Pilates & Yoga in Alexandria, VA, likes to goof around. Yet her commitment to her students and her skill set in the field is no joke. After graduating from University of Virginia with a degree in Sports Medicine, Megan went on to receive her Masters in Physical Therapy and eventually her Doctorate in the profession. Although Pilates was never part of the plan, the method changed the way she treated patients, positively re-directed her career path and enhanced her own active lifestyle. Customized Pilates instruction is her specialty–she designs classes based on clients needs: athletes, new moms, rehabilitation or just for fun (why be serious all the time?). Pilates + Yoga is the best of both worlds, hence the creation of Mind the Mat studios providing classes for all—in every walk of life.

Mind the Mat Pilates & Yoga was founded in 2008 by Megan Brown, Doctor of Physical Therapy and Polestar Certified Practitioner of Pilates for Rehabilitation and Sara VanderGoot, Nationally Certified Massage Therapist and Registered Yoga Teacher (e-RYT 200, RYT 500). In their private practices as physical therapist and massage therapist respectively Megan and Sara observed that many of their clients were coming in with similar needs: relief for neck and shoulder tension and low back pain as well as a desire for more flexibility in hips and legs, stability in joints, and core strength.

Together Megan and Sara carefully crafted a curriculum of Pilates and yoga classes to address needs for clients who are pregnant, postpartum, have injuries or limitations, who are new to Pilates and yoga, and for those who are advanced students and are looking for an extra challenge.
