As mentioned earlier this week, the 80s are having a moment. I have far more positivity about the 80s makeup looks that are coming back for the season than I did that decade’s hairstyles.
You may remember that I recently tried this one. It’s pretty, and definitely wearable. I approve. If you have tried it in your favorite soft pink or natural blush tone, feel free to branch out and do something a little bolder, like Kevyn Aucoin’s hot red shade “Fira,” or use the brighter shades in the Smashbox L.A. Lights Blush and Highlight Palettes. (My favorite of those is “Pacific Coast Pink.”)
We saw a lot of pretty washes of bright colors on the runway, but I’ll say it: there’s a fine line between wearing blue or pink eyeshadow in a pretty, modern way and wearing blue or pink eyeshadow in a way that makes you look like you haven’t updated your makeup since 1984. Try wearing your bright not so much as a feature, but swept lightly across the lower lid, the way you’d wear a neutral shimmer.
From the high-shine pinks and corals to a big, bold, cool red, anything goes. Bold lipstick is always in style, whether we’re talking the mod whites of the 60s or the deep browns and purples of the 90s. This iteration of the poppy shades of the 1980s brings back an element of refined fun. The smooth mattes of 2016 are taking a bit of a backseat to the shinier options, and a juicy red-berry lip has never been better!
