My Top 5 Emmy Awards Looks
Fall means more than back-to-school, transition clothing, and harvesting the last of summer’s bountiful fruits and vegetables. There’s also the Emmy Awards. I admit that I’m falling short on how much television I actually watch these days but that doesn’t impact my desire to check out who’s wearing who on the red carpet. Of course, writing for Stylebook keeps my head in the game even when there’s a soccer carpool beckoning for my Uber skills.
I managed to fit in a glimpse at actual “walking” the carpet before I had to scoot and was completely taken by Joey King in a swath of plum tulle by Zac Posen. As I left the house, I had already ID’d one of my favorite Emmy looks.

Then once I arrived back home and the Red Carpet Looks were winding down as the Emmys were about to begin, I caught a glimpse of Penelope Cruz. I thought she looked absolutely stunning in Chanel. It was actually inspired by a dress from the Chanel Haute Couture Spring 2017 Collection, where the original was created in a warmer shade of gray. It should also be noted that her gown took a mere 300 hours to embroider (safe to say those busy hands aren’t watching television either). The strapless version looked so fresh on Penelope with her hair pulled back in a classic high ponytail. This woman never ages.
Jessica Biel’s is another flawless red carpet look. I feel as though I am a wee bit unoriginal in my selections but it would have been a crime not to send her a nod as well. Another stunning strapless white gown featuring a dramatic skirt with an asymmetric drape and a semi-sheer bodice. I especially loved the half moon fabric, as well as her hair and makeup. Sure, it’s hard to mess up a woman as gorgeous as Jessica Biel, but the lip and eye liner were spot on for this glam goddess.
What’s interesting about my selections is that the two white strapless dresses were quite similar and the last three were all in a similar hue, as well. I noticed that there was a lot of personality at the Emmys. The dresses and outfits represented personal style choices of the nominees and presenters. The choices were predominantly solid in color. Prints and color blocking took a back seat to some major bold color in the gown choices. However, the men went off script by getting creative with their usual uniform.
The final two selections that caught my attention were from Sandra Oh and Tracee Ellis Ross. Starting with Tracee, that gown on her was pretty magnificent. She can rock so many looks and I’m a huge fan of her style even outside of the award shows. With a big personality like hers, a dress with such monumental scale works. There are no shrinking violets in this Valentino gown.
Finally, Sandra Oh. I really loved her in this vintage-inspired number, which is from Ralph & Russo. The color looked amazing on her, as well as the velvet, which also matched her shoes. The plunging neckline felt like a perfect balance of skin to fabric — you may have heard about my skin-to-fabric ratio theory! Very fitting for a historic moment in Emmy history! She is the first woman of Asian descent to be nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series, for her work on BBC‘s Killing Eve.
