My mother never demanded we do anything particular for Mother’s Day. She’d typically slave over making a delicious breakfast, which she claims to enjoy. We would go out to dinner as a family and maybe go to the Arboretum to look at blooming flowers.
As we got older, we went to dinner as a family, which got to be more and more rare with school activities and busy social lives. So I understand that must have felt special to her, but in hindsight, we should have done more!
I have two brothers, so the thought of them coming up with anything extraordinary to do for mom was always laughable. My dad wasn’t much better, but he would at least remember to get a card. I would attempt to coordinate group gifts from the boys and myself, but once we all got scattered across the country, it became too much. They are on their own.
As I enter this next phase of life, as I join the Motherhood Gang, maybe it’s the hormones, but I have this emotional response that it is never too late to start a new tradition. I’d love to start taking my mom to brunch on Mother’s Day and then a museum of her choice. A few years ago, when we lived in the same town, I was able to take her out to a cute French restaurant in Portland, Maine for crêpes…just us girls. Now, living right outside D.C. with access to all of these museums, I think it would be a great excuse for us to wander into the city and enjoy the day.
While I know it’s not all about gifts, I have always purchased my mom scarves. There is something special about wrapping up all of her favorite colors, patterns, and silky textures into a gift. I’d love to switch things up and give her more experiences, rather than solely objects. After all, creating memories is what life is all about.
I’d love to hear about your Mother’s Day Traditions — successes and failures!
