mixing it up with the cocktail boom

With the cocktail boom set to continue into 2016 and beyond, many furniture designers have anticipated a growing demand for the little side “drinks” table. And, now more than ever, there are so many fabulous shapes, sizes, materials, and finishes to choose from. For both the cocktail and the furniture style, it’s all about the creative mix and twist on the classic.

While brass and warm gold-toned metal frames are very much on trend at the latest furniture markets, so is mixing up organic shapes and texture and live-edge tables. Here are a few options of tables available through Coco Blanca, and if you’d like to see some of the latest trends across the Atlantic, click here to view top coffee table designs in Paris at Maison et Objet 2016.

While the Mojito still leads as a favorite cocktail in both the States and the UK, mid-century classics like the Martini, Manhattan, Old Fashioned, and Moscow Mule are making a surprising comeback at buzzy new restaurants and top cocktail lounges in both countries, but often served with a slight variation. One of the most respected names in the business, John “JOD” O’Donnell, says variations on the classic Moscow Mule in the States are huge right now, including the Irish mule, made with Jameson, and the Yankee mule, made with bourbon. And yet another growing trend in 2016 is the room-temperature, spirit-forward nightcap cocktail made without ice. Philadelphia-based bartender Colin Shearn insists “not using any dilution or chill to alter the ingredients really makes you focus on the ingredients and the ratios.”

Here in London, I have a new favorite, and it’s a twist on the British Summer classic, Pimm’s, which is almost as much a tradition as the cup of tea. The original gin-based Pimm’s, is now known as No. 1 cup. And since it is the middle of winter, I love the warm twist on this classic using No. 3 Cup or Pimm’s Winter Cup, which is a brandy-based Pimm’s released in 2005 using extra spices and orange peel. For a deliciously creative winter treat, there’s nothing more inviting than a warm Winter Pimm’s waiting for you on your favorite drinks table!
