mastering style influences

The Masters Golf Tournament is a pretty big deal in our home. Whatever the plans are for that particular weekend, they need to allow for television coverage of the final few holes. This year was nowhere near a nail biter as Jordan Spieth became the second youngest player to win the Masters. I gave my stamp of approval based on what an incredibly nice guy he is…seriously, as a mother, this is the type of guy I would want my children to emulate. My husband is a huge fan of Phil Mickelson (another great guy) and he’s gone on record with, “It’s hard not to like and pull for the guy.” You may wonder why I am discussing golf in a style segment.

Style influences can generate from almost anywhere. During the World Cup last year, I speculated that fashion designers would be influenced by the dynamic culture of Brazil. Nicole Miller was one such designer. Take a look at her SS15 collection and you’ll find splashy florals and the infamous sidewalk prints of Impanema.

As Jordan Spieth has taken the world stage in golf, I can’t help but take notice of his style and start to ponder the ramifications of his choices – namely, the slimmer fitting pants. Yes, while others are watching for the perfect stance, grip and follow through, I am checking out what these guys are wearing. There is a distinct difference in the attire of younger golfers like Spieth and another favorite, Adam Scott. They are influencing golf icons like Phil Mickelson as well as the general public.

I had an opportunity to run this theory by a friend who actually attended the Master’s and he endorsed my theory whole heartedly. He brought to my attention that it’s not only the pants but the shirts; they are no longer as loose on the arms but hugging tightly on the biceps. Every generation puts their spin on style and those nuances start to influence how trends change…even on the greens among a more mature audience.

What irony that women’s pants are widening as men’s are taking on a more tapered slim leg. I can’t say for certain that this will transfer to the men in your life, but I’m all for what I like to call “weaning in the seam.” A gradual adjusting of the width of the leg will update a man’s wardrobe tremendously. Working with guys and their wardrobes has shed light on the gender. They care what they wear on a few levels but not necessarily on the same ones as women do. Comfort ranks high on the list for guys and the idea of narrowing a pant leg will seem restricting. However, when pointing out that a narrow leg will give the appearance of seeming taller, they’re more likely to consider.

  1. ah, golf wear. love the classic lines and how polished many men look out on the course. so thrilled that Mr. Fowler has toned down some of his picks from what I’ve seen.

Thanks for the gorgeous pics of the sporty golfers. Glad they’re stepping it up and hope we’ll see the influence on the general male populace sooner than later :-)!!
