making “you” a priority this year

As you’re making your goals and resolutions for the year and thinking about the dreams you want to realize in 2015, have you thought about how your style will play into these changes? Often, the quickest way to reflect change and get positive feedback is to focus on improving your personal appearance. By taking care of your outer self, you’re taking care of your whole self. When you greet life feeling good about the image you’re projecting, it really can change the direction of your life.

Start to mentally carve time out for yourself this year. Be prepared to say no to some things so you can say yes to yourself. Once you start to focus on self-care, you’ll gain confidence and start to see your other goals for the year start to fall into place.

Here are some ideas for ways you can spend your self-care time:

1. Get your closet organized. Are you struggling to put together an outfit in the morning because your closet is cluttered with items that don’t work? Get your clothes organized by separating out anything that you can’t wear today (e.g. too big, out of season, needs to be tailored), and use these closet dividers to create different categories.

2. Make your clothes wearable again. If something needs to be repaired or tailored, get it done. If you have a fabulous skirt but no top to wear with it, shop for one. Make the clothes in your closet wearable before running out and buying more of what you don’t need.

3. Use technology to stay organized. Snap a photo of yourself in the mirror when you spontaneously put together a fabulous outfit that you’d like to remember; keep a list on your phone of items missing from your closet as you notice them so you know what to focus on when you head out to the shops.

4. Book an appointment with your hairstylist to create a haircut that’s easier to style in the morning or get a make up lesson at Bellacara to learn techniques to get you out the door in less time.

5. Spend time just putting together outfits, head to toe, including shoes, accessories, outerwear, etc. Take photos of these outfits. (See more ideas in this article on 7 ways to shop your closet.)

6. Accept yourself right where you are. You don’t have to know all the steps required to create a confident personal image. Make a first appointment, whether it’s with yourself or a professional. Follow through. Then weigh the “next step” suggestions that come up. Take another step. You’ll get there.
