what to wear: blue shadow

Kerry Washington is beautiful. She’s also a huge sunscreen advocate, which makes me like her even more. Let’s talk about how perfectly she’s wearing this blue eye shadow. Blue is making a comeback, folks, but it doesn’t have to feel like we’re thrown in a time machine and blasted back to the 1980s.

Step One: Prep skin with moisturizer and prime with a hydrating primer. Apply a long-wearing eye primer. (The last thing we want with a bold shadow look is creasing!)

Step Two: Use a small eye shadow brush to press a sparkly light blue shadow into your lower lids. A similar one to Kerry’s is Stila Aquamarine. If you find that a brush will not give you as much color deposit as you’d like without getting sparkle all over your cheeks, go ahead and use your finger to gently roll a bit of color over the lid instead.

Step Three: Use a black liquid liner pen to create a very thin definition just along the lashline. I’m loving the new Ultrathin by Blinc, but anything like that would be lovely.

Step Four: Fill in your brows! Vincent Longo Bi-Brow Powder and Pomade is an awesome option for this, because you can add to the shape with the powder and get a shiny finish and hold with the pomade. Use a matte highlighting shade of eye shadow on your brow bone to enhance your brow shape and hold up to the blue.

Step Five: Apply a dewy foundation all over. Vincent Longo Dew Finish or Smashbox Liquid Halo HD are both phenomenal choices for this look–long-wearing but so skin-like. I prefer to use a beautyblender for most things like this, but if you prefer a brush for your application, feel free. Keep in mind that you will always get a smoother, more even application of foundation with a beautyblender or brush than with fingers, and this is especially important for an event-y look like this. Blend your concealer of choice into your undereye and any other places it’s needed.

Step Six: Apply a soft touch of blush to the apples of your cheeks, and trail that up the underside of your cheekbone. The new Stila Aqua Glow Watercolor Blushes are such a delicate bit of color, and will fit in seamlessly with this look. Use a sheer pink lipstick to add just a little color to your lips without taking away from the eyes.

Step Seven: Finish your look by curling your lashes and adding three coats of the new Stila Huge Extreme Mascara to top lashes. Touch your lower lashes with the mascara to provide a little definition, and voila! C’est parfait.
