There’s just something about the month of November that makes me crave coziness. The clocks have been set back, so the evenings are longer. The leaves have begun to fall from the trees, and the sky begins to resemble pre-Winter coldness, bringing a chill to my bones. And then there’s the anticipation of family togetherness with the approaching holidays.
I will be celebrating this Thanksgiving in London, and beginning a new tradition. But I’ll always hang onto the memories with my family. Nothing is better than the amazing aromas and contagious laughter that come from the kitchen when I’m cooking all day with my brother and his wife, who are authentic farm-to-table artisans. The fire is going, the wine is flowing, recipes are modified, stories are shared, hugs are plentiful, photos are snapped, sauces splatter, confections are tasted, and aromas intoxicate. The coziest of times!
And then there’s always a mishap or two to make the memories even more colorful. Like when my son, Malcolm, came in from the cold wearing a down vest and leaned up against the glass face of the gas fireplace to warm up. After sampling a forkful of quince tarte Tatin, and successfully warming up, he began to head back outside. There was uncontrollable laughter as he turned around to discover his vest melted onto the fireplace, and down feathers flying all over the kitchen! All memories that I will hold onto forever…the coziest of times. I may not be spending this Thanksgiving with my family, but I will be thinking of them warmly and fondly as I attempt to add some coziness to my new surroundings and make it feel like home, as well.
