Jack Rudy Nipping at Your Nose

So it’s cold outside.  The joy of the holidays is over and all we are left with are cold noses and toes.  I don’t know about you, but now that we are in full-fledge winter mode, I could stand a drink.  What better way to warm up than with a cocktail by the fire?  A glass of your favorite spirit with a dash of this and a twist of that and voilà, your nose is no longer cold and you can feel your fingers and toes again, if only momentarily.

At Red Barn Mercantile, we like to make our drinks with a little help from Jack Rudy Cocktail Co. Their mission is “to take long forgotten staples of the American bar and reinvent them, in an effort to drink like our great-grandparents might once have.”  Named after founder and mixologist Brooks Reitz’s great-grandfather, Jack Rudy makes small batch staples like Grenadine and classic Tonic in Charleston, S.C., where, like any good southern town, they like a good drink.

Jack Rudy has partnered with well-known mixologists around the world to create recipes using their products.  Our current favorite is a Pink Lady from New York City’s Death & Co. made with Jack Rudy’s Small Batch Grenadine and Bourbon Cocktail Cherries.  The Grenadine is made with pomegranate juice from a small family farm in Madera, California, cane sugar, and orange flower water with enough heat applied to dissolve the sugar while still maintaining the kick of the juice.

As for the cherries, Jack Rudy uses good old fashioned Kentucky bourbon with fresh Oregon cherries to make the perfect accompaniment to any number of drinks.  (Side note, they are also the perfect hostess gift!)

Pink Lady

In a shaker tin without ice combine:

1.50 ounces Plymouth Gin

.50 ounces Laird’s Apple Brandy

.75 ounces Fresh Lemon Juice

.75 ounces Simple Syrup

.25 ounces Jack Rudy Grenadine

Dry shake all ingredients vigorously, and then add ice and shake again.

Strain into a rocks glass with 1 large ice cube.

Garnish with 3 Jack Rudy Bourbon Cherries on a cocktail pick

A simple recipe like this made with quality ingredients is a great way to give Jack Frost the proverbial finger.  Enjoy!

  • The latest from Amy
Owner Amy Rutherford started Red Barn because she wanted to deliver a service — to provide both old and new in one place. No longer will busy shoppers be limited to reproductions or forced to shop multiple flea markets for the look or gifts they want. The trick in blending old and new, vintage and modern, classic and quirky, is balance. And Amy’s knack for mixing rustic antiques with urban chic has created a look that is both fresh and familiar.

Red Barn Mercantile opened its doors in September 2007 with a single vision in mind: providing old and new to offer our customers signature whole-room designs at great prices.

We’re more than a furniture boutique and provide more personalized service than a big box retailer. We work hard to bring you the highest quality furniture and gifts, the most unique conversation starters, wall hangings and accent pieces, whether they come from off-the-beaten-track flea markets, or the latest designers.
