fashion by the pound

Fashion magazines have been my obsession from the time I was in high school. It started with Seventeen. Phoebe Cates was on the cover and the pounds since then would confound a structural engineer. August has always been my favorite month (birthday month and the best fall fashion magazine month of the year!) and as I set off for my long awaited family vacation, I just about broke baggage restrictions on our flight and had to be instructed by the flight attendant to lighten my load before I took out the woman in row 19C as I lifted my “carry-on” over her head.

Magazines are my visual inspiration – I look at everything from the typeface and layout to the clothing and articles. The actual merchandise is out of my price range but the shapes, colors, textures, and proportions will influence my decisions. There are plenty of things I disregard either from the impractical nature or the fact that I’ve been there and done that, but each season I will come away with what I deem relevant.

Here’s my briefing of Fall’s Fashion Newsstand. (I’ve chosen 5 subjects from 3 magazines with some extras and then some notable ads.)

  • The latest from Alicia
Alicia was born and raised in Alexandria, and married a local boy. She is happily married and the mother of two amazing children and one adorable and terribly smart border terrier named Dixie. Alicia has always known she was a creative. She collected editions of Vogue from junior high on and has always loved clothing and design. She studied interior design at VCU and parlayed that degree into commercial interior design, the web design, and ultimately found herself managing a local boutique and serving as a stylist to many Alexandrian women. She now has a successful full-time styling business, The Tulle Box, and makes it her business to make her clients feel great about themselves and the way they look.

You are telling my story! I would eagerly wait each month for Vogue to arrived on newsstands and walk to the drug store and use my babysitting money to get the latest issue. The September was ALWAYS the icing on the cake. To this day, all magazines (fashion and home particularly) are inspiration to me. I will be very sad when the physical hard copy goes away. Great post!
