false lashes are not the boogeyman of makeup

Let’s get one thing out of the way: putting on false eyelashes doesn’t have to be scary, gross, or stressful.

We just started carrying a new line of false lashes at Bellacara, and the range of this line is incredible. There’s a style for every look, whether you’re putting on some huge drama for prom or a gala, adding a couple individual flares for a bit of fun, or using the most natural ones you can find to replace yours as they thin.

The first step to successfully wearing a strip of fake lashes is to measure and trim them. Gently take the lash off the tray, and hold it up to your eye, with one end lined up with your outer corner. If they fit perfectly as they are, and you don’t need any trimming, hooray! If they start to look a little funny as they near the inner corner of your eye, or they’re too long and the strip pokes your eye, get a pair of manicure or haircutting scissors and trim off as much as you think will make them look more natural. I don’t recommend using regular scissors, because the blades tend to be pretty bulky, and you don’t want to accidentally mess up your strip!

Next is the glue. I prefer to use a latex-based glue for lashes, whether strips or individuals, because I think it comes off the most cleanly–just press a warm washcloth gently to your eye for a couple minutes to soften the latex, and it should peel right off, leaving your lashes intact. To apply, make a small line of adhesive along the strip of the lashes, and then wait up to 30 seconds before gently placing them on your made-up eye. I always recommend wearing mascara under the falsies, as extra insurance that the adhesive will stick to the mascara, not your skin or lashes. Feel free to use either your fingers or a set of tweezers for this step. If needed, use the joint end of the tweezers to push the strip further into your lashes, so it bumps up against the lashline.

Let them dry for a few minutes–I wait as long as I possibly can, just to be absolutely certain they’re well and truly dry–and then put a thin line of liquid eyeliner over where the adhesive strip is. (If you’re wearing individuals, this step isn’t necessary.) This is called “tracking the lashes,” and it’s just to make sure the glue and strip aren’t too obvious. Even if the style you pick is outrageous, we can’t have people thinking they’re fake, now, can we?

False lashes are a fun and easy way to add a little extra drama to your look. We’re planning a small class for early next month, so I can walk you through lashes, step by step. Stay tuned for the details, and feel free to call Bellacara to reserve your seat!
