Fall 17 Preview

Stepping outside on summer mornings in NOVA make me question why we live here. Transplanted from New England going on six years now — how did THAT happen?! — it just doesn’t get any easier to deal with this heat and humidity.

In a twisted way, it makes me dream about fall. The cooler weather outside, the leaves changing, layers upon layers of clothing, and the chunky cozy sweaters. I escape to my backyard by the the crackle of a fire with a cold nose and a warm hot toddy in my hand. I can’t wait for the weather to cool down, as much as I don’t want summer to be over.

As you start to dive into these summer sales, keep reminding yourself to buy smarter. Don’t buy it because it is on sale, buy it because it has meaning in your wardrobe. Alicia has been talking a lot about this (she knows what she is talking about!!).

To help you map out your future investments in the luscious fabrics of fall, which tend to be more expensive, let’s review some of the common themes and sneak peeks of what TSALT is bringing in for fall.

Trend Alerts

Cold Shoulder  Just thought I should let you know, that is still around. We are seeing it in everything from t-shirts to cocktail dresses. So be prepared.

Sleeve details  We are seeing so much happening on the sleeve! So leave your bracelets at home — your top will do the talking. From peplum pleats to bubble knit, there is a shape out there that will work for you, no matter your body type. Embrace the DRAMA of the sleeve!

Embroidery  Intricately embroidered jackets, precisely embellished jeans, fully decked-out cocktail dresses! It’s everywhere, and we are loving it.

Destruction  We’ve been wearing the destroyed and raw hem jeans, but this trend is being carried over into tops and dresses as well! Think intentional holes in sweaters, raw-edge hems on party dresses.

Ruffles  I am not the biggest fan of ruffles, just ask Tamara, who heard me moan and groan at market about why ruffles were everywhere!! Sure, we picked up a couple of blouses that have this detail, but the one that got me out of my funk was the Marie St. Pierre Dress with the ruffle circle on the back of this dress (bottom row, far right, above). This dress is also a quick dry material, so performance and pack-ability is a home run on this color blocked number.

There are so many more trends we saw, but to name a few: wide leg pants, jeans, and jumpsuits; stars, roses, and lightning bolts on EVERYTHING; graphic tees; and, military-inspired clothing (think camo, bomber jackets, cargo, etc).
