it’s detox time!

Just take a look around. All the holiday lights and decor have been boxed away, and now without the swirl of parties, friends, and families we have an opportunity to look back on the previous year and assess. We get organized and go on diets. We get rid of clutter and excess. We take with us what worked, and let go of what didn’t. In essence, we detoxify our bodies, our minds, our hearts, our homes and offices. This is what allows us to see our path forward more clearly, to envision what’s next and move toward it with clarity and intention.

This time of year our bodies naturally desire detoxification. It’s like spring cleaning for the body. Detoxification is a integral part of the practice of yoga. Practitioners use clean eating, breath techniques, meditation, stillness, and periods of silence to detoxify body and mind in order to gain clarify of vision.

At Mind the Mat we offer seasonal clean eating cleanses lead by our studio nutritionist, Amy Arnold, RYT 200, HC, RM, OTP, to support our clients in their detoxification process. Mind the Mat yoga and Pilates advisors also encourage clients who are interested in detoxification to take yoga and Pilates classes in our state of the art hot studio, designed to incorporate the ideal combination of heat, humidity and ventilation. Heat aids in flexibility, cleansing and weight loss. Lactic acid and stress hormones stored in muscles are released through stretching, and excess toxins through sweating.

A class designed specifically to aid detoxification includes plenty of twisting and powerful cleansing breath techniques. Mind the Mat offers heated classes of various levels and styles: gentle yoga, flow yoga level I/II, power flow yoga, and Pilates. The best way to try Mind the Mat heated classes is to visit www.mindthemat.com and purchase a class package or membership. New clients may purchase 5 classes for $39. Monthly memberships (unlimited classes) are available for $99. 5 and 10 class packages are also available.

Before becoming a massage therapist and yoga instructor, she was a lawyer in the Washington D.C. area and found that the healing practices of massage and yoga brought a balance to her life that she had been searching for.

Mind the Mat Pilates & Yoga was founded in 2008 by Megan Brown, Doctor of Physical Therapy and Polestar Certified Practitioner of Pilates for Rehabilitation and Sara VanderGoot, Nationally Certified Massage Therapist and Registered Yoga Teacher (e-RYT 200, RYT 500). In their private practices as physical therapist and massage therapist respectively Megan and Sara observed that many of their clients were coming in with similar needs: relief for neck and shoulder tension and low back pain as well as a desire for more flexibility in hips and legs, stability in joints, and core strength.

Together Megan and Sara carefully crafted a curriculum of Pilates and yoga classes to address needs for clients who are pregnant, postpartum, have injuries or limitations, who are new to Pilates and yoga, and for those who are advanced students and are looking for an extra challenge.
