Mother’s Day is May 9, and this month we acknowledge not only our mothers but also what it means to be a mother. The first image that comes to mind for me is a colorful arrangement of flowers in the middle of the dining room table in my mother’s home sent to her by her two daughters and three grandchildren. The idea brings me joy and hope, but what it means to be a mother and have a mother isn’t always that simple. Actually, it can be pretty complicated. Mother-daughter relationships are notorious for being fraught with tension. Some people have lost their mothers, are estranged from their mothers, or wish they were mothers to children but aren’t. So, this holiday isn’t all roses. It can bring up a range of emotions and memories. And yet, beyond all the disappointments, heartbreaks, and losses, we can still choose to see the beauty of motherhood and find a special way to celebrate it.
In her debut novel, Broken Glass, my mother, Mary VanderGoot, author and Ph.D. in Psychology, reflects on motherhood through the experiences of her characters. Broken Glass is the first novel in the Maggie Barnes Trilogy. Maggie is the matriarch of a family of characters who will remind you of people you know. Follow Mary VanderGoot on her website at www.maryvandergoot.com and on social media @maryvandergoot and on Facebook. Stay tuned for the next two novels in the trilogy coming out soon!

Mind the Mat Pilates & Yoga was founded in 2008 by Megan Brown, Doctor of Physical Therapy and Polestar Certified Practitioner of Pilates for Rehabilitation and Sara VanderGoot, Nationally Certified Massage Therapist and Registered Yoga Teacher (e-RYT 200, RYT 500). In their private practices as physical therapist and massage therapist respectively Megan and Sara observed that many of their clients were coming in with similar needs: relief for neck and shoulder tension and low back pain as well as a desire for more flexibility in hips and legs, stability in joints, and core strength.
Together Megan and Sara carefully crafted a curriculum of Pilates and yoga classes to address needs for clients who are pregnant, postpartum, have injuries or limitations, who are new to Pilates and yoga, and for those who are advanced students and are looking for an extra challenge.
