Behind the Design: The Right Angle Bangle (aka My “Mama Bangle”)
People sometimes ask if I have a favorite design from our &Co. line and while I hesitate to express any unjust favoritism (if I didn’t love a design, I wouldn’t make it!), I will admit that there is a particular piece that holds more meaning to me than the others…
Our Right Angle Bangle originated as a gift to me from Tim after the birth of our first child. He created a bangle that was thin enough to comfortably wear on a daily basis and its ovaline shape contoured perfectly with my arm so that I could hold our son without a more circular shape digging into my forearm. Wanting to make a bangle that was different from what I normally wore — our Thumbprint Bangle, if you are interested — he added a unique little right angle accent to the shape to give it some character. Then, because our son was born in July, he set a tiny little ruby on the inside of the right angle accent so that it would be my little “secret.” I’m a very private person so I especially loved the hidden quality of the ruby, that it’s set in a way that I could always see it but others couldn’t.
Because of its providence I have always thought of this design as my “Mama Bangle,” and I always show it to people when they ask about how they can create a deeply personal gift without creating something completely outlandish. I think that’s what we specialize in overall, to be honest. Creating thoughtful, unique pieces that our clients treasure for a lifetime (and then some). My husband fellow Alx&Co. owner Tim, with his empathetic soul and skill with design, perfectly encapsulates this approach with every piece he makes.
