Alison: I am going to the tree lighting in New York this year and will be outdoors for hours. Any tips for staying warm AND looking stylish?
Cathy, Style Speaks: The most important item to staying stylish in this situation is a fabulous coat. Since you’ll be outdoors for the event, you’ll leave your coat on the entire time and it will be the most prominent piece of your look. Leave your basic black go-to in the closet and, instead, wear a statement making coat with interesting details. Think colors like burgundy or olive green and details such as leather, zippers or interesting buttons. Choose a shape that flatters your body type – most women look best with a defined waistline so try a coat with a belt or tie waist and a stand up collar for interest and extra warmth.
On the bottom, wear something skinny such as thick leggings or skinny jeans and your favorite pair of knee high boots. A riding boot or over-the-knee style will be on point and practical for walking outside. Finish off the look with some warm accessories: a wool brimmed hat is very on trend this season, a pair of leather gloves and a colorful scarf will do the trick.
